rust, rust and more rust
First time poster here. Just purchased a 72 F100 that is mechanically sound and asthetically challenged. A little (or a lot) of rust has never scared me away from the potential behind a good vehicle.
This PU has rust in about every area that has had a rust problem. And then some. From the fenders and doors to the floor pans and hood hinge attach points.
First and foremost on my list of concerns is the floor pans. I have seen them listed for sale at several locations but my only concern with any of them is just how far up the forward wall do they extend? The rust I have uncovered so far extends up the forward wall to a point of about the first bend coming down the firewall. And as I would expect to be somewhat normal it is mostly concentrated to the sidewall edge of each floor pan.
My question/concern is how far up do the replacement pans go and if they don't go up that far then what is the best course of action to fix that area? Patch panels? Also, what is the prefered way of installing these replacement panels? Weld or pop rivet?
I have also found that the rust in this area extends into the kick plate area as well. Are there replacement panels for this or is this another area of patch panels?
It has been several years since I have tackled any rust repairs. What is the recommended product to treat the area after the rust has been removed.
One last question. What can be done, if anything, to prevent or lessen the chances of the floor pans rusting out in the future?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Bryan
