I purposely made the title of this thread a little vague and posted it here in hopes of not starting a long discussion on the other forum about the correct color to use on engine parts.
As I have been conducting the restoration on my 54 truck, I have simply re-painted all the pieces parts the same color that I found them once I cleaned all the gunk off. Pretty simple and no need for a thousand differing opinions.
But here's the thing that is bugging me: My Fordomatic tranny is black, with the ID tag dark green just as it should be, but as I cleaned-up and prepped the drain pan for paint, I found the original color to be orange. Orange? What's up with that. The original truck color is vermellen (Red), which is a little orangish, but not this color of orange - this is safety vest orange.
Any thoughts? Has anyone seen an orange drain pan on a Fordomatic?
I think what you are seeing is a primer/rust inhibitor. You'll see this color on Ford 9" differentials, too. Red Oxide, probably with an oil stain that makes it look orange.
Thank goodness.... I was having a real hard time bringing myself to paint it orange! I should have thought of this as I'm using a simular primer.... senior moments are coming earlier and earlier!
