man something isnt right thats for sure. that 460 sounds good. my old 2.9 4x4 never got that bad of gas mileage but i would never know because back then it didnt matter. gas was only 98 cents a gallon who cared? hope you find the problem. let us know if you did.

o.k. check obvoius stuff like tire pressure, air filter, maybe a fuel filter. if the check engine light is on it may need O2 sensors, could be alot of little things, check for stored codes. might do a compression check with that many miles on it, you could have a dead or weak cylinder(s). with the auto trans theres always the posibility its not getting into high gear. lets us know what you find.

Are you sure your not leaking it somewhere, that seems like a lot to burn in a little 2.9?

Does that have a mechanical fuel pump? If the diaphram is leaking that might account for the bad mileage. Do you smell gasoline under the hood or anywhere?

the only thing i ever drove that did that bad was a '77 F250 with the 400, full-time 4wd 4.10's and the C6 auto. and even at that it would get 8-9. theres got to be something going on, possibly many contributing issues.

the truck seems slugish all the time, when it first starts up it will run like **** and blow black smoke, i have really smelt any gas or unburnt gas but i havent been lookingfor it either, i will check tomarrow. i no that the truck needs front wheel barings really bad, would that make the trck do this bad or could it just be all the above?

blowing black smoke means its running too rich. I'd check the fuel pressure regulator, and run some injector clenaer

Mass air flow meter is dirty. Take the intake tube apart, buy some MAF cleaner, and spray away, do not touch it with your hands or any tools, very fragile. Wheel bearings will hurt economy, but not that much. You should be getting 15-18 mpg out of that 2.9.

an 88 is still MAP. I'm still leaning towards the fuel pressure regulator. You can test the map by unplugging the electrical connection. If the truck stops blowing black smoke and runs better then it is your MAP.
