Hello, I have a 71 I painted with acrlic enamel, I have a quart left and would like to paint an older shell I just traded for. The shell top is some form of plastic or pvc, it;s not fiberglass, the sides are aluminum, there is a pressed in type of design so I don't see how I can wet sand. Can I spray it with epoxy primer and then shoot it with the acrlic and expect fairly good results? I'm real ready to get this thing painted so any help would really be appretiated.
The good news is that anything can be painted. The problem is trying to find the right products. The plastic surface you mentioned needs to be scruffed i.e., remove all gloss. With acrylic enamel 400 grit will suffice. As for the metal (aluminum probably) you may get away with a chromate application of primer. Better double check this though. Some chromate primers will go on clean aluminum and you can top coat using your acrylic in about 15 min. Note that the metal needs to be clean. I would remove the oxidation on the aluminum using 320 grit. For any depressions use the maroon colored Scotch Brite pad.
there is a type of primer that is not supposed to be sanded but I don't know the name. If you can't wet sand the primer you'll want this type of primer. I'd stop by one of your local autobody suppliers and ask about this.
If you can find it, try www.autobodystore.com they have a great bbs.
