Single stage paint questions.......

I am planning to paint my 69 F100 in a couple of weeks before it gets to chilly here in Texas. The last time I painted I re-did the hood and roof on my car and I used Urethene Enamel, mixed it per instructions, shot it at around 76 deg F. And it took forever to set up. The guy who sold it to me said that they knew there was a problem, (the manufacture) and reformulated. I want to shoot single stage, and I just want a decent job on my ole weekend truck. Any suggestions ??

Check with your paint supplier for a quality reducer that will match the atmospheric conditions you expect to paint in. A slow reducer is used when the air is warm and a fast reducer is used when it's cooler. No pun intended, but I have "glossed" over a lot, but this gives you the jist of it.

Single stage paint questions.......

Thanks Stock man,

They mostly want to sell me a gallon kit with paint, reducer, hardener in one package. So I will sure look into a reducer to match my temps.

Oleblue70,

Yes it did set up and it was tacky enough to shoot 25 minutes between coats. However, overall cure time was disappointing.
They sold me a package of paint, reducer and hardener, is the hardener what you are calling a cataylist ? Anyway, I mixed according to instructions and conditions and shot in 76 Deg.

The first coat was very light and only produced about 25% coverage. I think I understand what you mean misting and that is pretty much what we done. It is just that the paint was open to stains from water (the water is very hard here in Texas) and bird droppings. I still need to compound it I guess. I just don't want the same problems to follow me into the booth on this job. I am trying to do my homework and I really thank you for the advice.
