My friend is in the market for a new truck and I am trying to talk him into a F150. As of right now, he is open to any make. He plans on putting a snow plow on it next fall. Keep in mind he only plans on doing a few drives. He does not pull a trailer and it will be used for daily transport.
Those of you who have a plow on their F150, how do you like it? How does it move the snow.
Please help me bring another one onto the Good Side.
From what ive read F150s arent the best built in the front end for a snow plow, maybe a f250 or 350 would be better suited to take the extra weight up front for a plow. Some chevys come with a more sustantial front suspension for a plow and is actually a factory installed option to do so. Im not sure if there is an option with the fords, but ive heard that plows can somewhat tear up front ends of 150s, but that can happen to any truck i guess. If you keep your eyes open around you, you see more f250-f350s with plows and barely any f150s but you see all sorts of chevys with plows.
All half tons have soft front ends which solely require stiffer front springs.(note a stiffer ride without the plow on the truck) I've tossed the idea of putting a plow on my F150. As long as it's just for residential use, a fisher 7'6 would be perfect IMO. Not a full 8ft but can still backdrag without having to make a million passes. Expect to replace stab links and balljoints a little more frequently, but ANY half ton will net you the same wear and tear with 500lbs hanging 3 feet over the front of the truck.
I had a 2002 silverado that had the snow plow prep package installed on it from the factory. (Just heavier front end) And it rode horibble cause the front was so stiff. I never had a plow on it.
The F150 is a perfectly good truck to put a properly sized plow onto. I've got a Fisher 7.5 SD (standard duty) plow on my 07 and it's great.
You'll find more people, especially those who don't have plows, saying "don't do it" or "it will wear out front end parts quickly", etc. But I've yet to have any issues with this truck or any of the other F150's I've plowed with. The key here is plow selection.
I'd suggest you and your friend visit http://www.plowsite.com/ and talk with others who plow to see what they have to offer.
Go to the plow site that SVT2205 recommends.
I have a Western Suburbanite on my 2005 Screw. It is light weight (~300lbs I think) and I like it. FORD does not recommend a heavy plow on the 1/2 tons.
I use to have heavy plow on a previous truck. This plow works just as well but I like it much more. I store it on a furniture dolly so I can roll it to the truck and lift it up and slide it on.
I plow, no problems. Pics in the gallery and there is quite a few threads on this already. Most people don't like it but w/e I haven't had any problems.
do they offer plow prep on f150
thought i saw local dealer ad for new at the time f150 w/installed plows maybe it was in
2006??
you dont wanna void warranty
2008 F-150 owners manual plainly says "No snow plowing" for the Screw, plowing with Scab and regular cab only.
Longer truck (Screw) with the same axle as the regular cab or Scab = too much weight for the front axle if you buy the heavy plow and use it a lot.
If you buy a lighter weight plow and use it for a few driveways a year, probably no problem, however don't expect Ford to agree if you burn something up in the front end prematurely.
They do have lighter plows for sure. Looking back on it I should have bought a lighter one. Like I said I still have yet to have any problems 3 years plowing. But I only plow my driveway and maybe one or 2 others and as soon as I'm done plowing I take the thing off. Gotta love the quick hitch systems.
