I bought a '99 F250 about 3 weeks ago, it has 135000 miles on it, sat in an old mans garage for the last 5 years. The truck appeared to be in great shape, but now I am having a few problems. I am sure this one is simple, the abs light will not go off, it came on after puting it in 4wd, any help here?
The second problem happened yesterday, the overdrive light on the tranny wont stop blinking, when I slow down to around 35 mph the speedometer goes to 0. And it seems to me it is not down shifting like it should, any idea? I heard the 99s and 00s had a smaller torque converter on them that gave a lot of problems.
Well I did notice that when the OD light starts flashing it shifts like crap, thats a given. It seems as it's trying to get the truck to where your going without using the torque converter.
I've noticed on cars that when your battery is bad it will activate the air bag light and abs but I'm not sure if that's what these trucks do. wait till more people are up and are able to answer you.
I think Pat is referring to the VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor. A cheap item and does some strange things to the transmission and can affect the ABS when it is bad.
Yup, it's the VSS on top of the rear pumpkin. Takes 10 minutes to remove and replace/or clean if you want to try that first. It's only a $20 part from Ford.
thanks guys, i thought it might be more costly than that, napa has one ordered for me. i am real thankful for the advise, and thanks for the welcome!!!
Check the fuses first, IIRC they are fused seperatley from the headlights. It may be a switch issue or a realy also. I can send you a wiring diagram later on today if needed. I'll need the year make and model of your truck along with if you have DRL or not, and an email address.
also i dont have the owners manual so i dont know what fuse #, but i pulled em all to make sure. its a 1999 f-250 4wd 7.3 liter. Have you guys heard that the 99 and the 00 have a smaller torque converter in them and a diferent turbo than the 01 - 03's. also how big of a programer can i put on it without damaging anything, i want more power and better fuel mileage of course.
You can get your owners manual here: https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp
The early 99's have a different turbo set up.
As far as a programmer go with a DP or TS. I have a DP it is custom programmed for the mods and the PCM code that I have on my truck. DP is the fave here.
I'll just sent you the diagram.
Welcome to the forum. DP is the tuner of choice. They are this forum's sponsor and they have a great product and fantastic customer service. You should get some supporting mod's first. They should include at a bare minimum a new intake (I recommend the 6637 filter from fleetfilter.com) and a set of gauges to include EGT, tranny temp and boost pressure.
