Hey guys, well here it is, I had my injection pump off, along with my upper timing gear cover to re-seal it since it leaked a little oil. And my very very dumb buddy hopped in the truck when i wasnt there and tried to fire it up!
So as you can imagine I have no idea where my timing is at. So i am asking if there is a way to line my cam timing mark back at 12'oclock so my injection pump will be in time when I place that gear back in. Is there any marks on the crank pulley or harmonic balencer anywhere that i can go by?
Pull the glow plug out of #1 cylinder, roll the engine with your buddies finger over GP hole, your looking for TDC on the compression stroke and scribe line on damper will be at TDC. You should be able to see the Y on the cam gear (very tough to see), Your IP gear should go in with dowel hole at 4 o'clock position. Make sure the Ys are together silicone the cam gear cover and install and then shoot your buddy. Something else, the cam gear is supposed to have red makings on the teeth on each side of the Y but it's not very often that you can actually see it.
If someone did that to mine a butter knife would be the least of their worries. You could always force his head in between the cover and gear so he could see the timing marks. That is if you let him within 100' of your truck.
The space between the timing gear cover and the cam gear is very tight.
You almost have to bow the timing gear cover to see the timing mark in the shiney knife surface.
The cam gear does not come all the way to the top of the timing gear cover plate.
So you have to see the front side of the gear below tooth level on a gear down inside the engine.
TDC is the only time the mark will be top dead center of the cam gear.
So now you are left to figure out TDC exhaust or TDC compression stroke.
How do I know if I am on my TDC exhaust stroke or TDC compression stroke? I got the scribe line on the harmonic balencer right, and the "y" marks lined up and felt for the compression stroke. and the truck just turns and turns, not even a sputter. I get a fog of unburnt out the stacks, thats it. The only thing else I can think of is that some how my glowplugs stopped workin too. but idk?
Pull the #1 GP when it pushes your finger off the hole its coming up on compression. Then pull the cover plate for the three IP gear bolts the dowel should be at 4 o'clock when your scribe mark on harmonic balancer is on TDC
