It works. Same with when a 4 wheel wagon starts to push you. Like Ron said, be safe in the first place and you won't have to get in this position.

does anyone know what caused the wreck??

from the pics it looks like something broke on the running gear.

not to mention he didnt have it tied down very well as the dozer should still be on the trailer!!

I do not know, but I do not think it was one thing. A bunch of things are wrong when I see the pics. Too fast for that much weight; he was pushing the limits; tie downs don't look proper; and that appears to be a pintle hitch on the back of the truck, not so great for high speed highway driving IMO; and I'm not up to speed on Dodge's so I can't tell if that is a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton truck. Then who knows? All of that combined with a lady putting on makeup and talking on the celly making a dumb move in front of him..........

The trailer itself looks like a disaster to me. Are those triple axles with 4 wheels on each axle on that short trailer? Imagine turning with that.

Just posted to make everyone including me, think about it next time we are pulling heavy.

20k+ with a 3/4 ton. Stupid is as stupid does. Esp short wheel base. You better have some serious leaf or bags under that thing, either that or a steady supply of axles, cause it wont be a matter of if, but when.

Pintle hitch in general is not the issue! Go look at a big truck pulling a pup or a dump truck with a tag along. I have a pintle on my skid trailer and pulls great at any speed.

There was a pic a on heavy equipment forums of a skid behind a little pickup that rolled. The subject was too small of pickup, but at least the guy had the thing secured. The skid was still chained on, just twisted all up! If you are in an accident unsecured cargo can become quite deadly!

It is a good reminder of how to handle heavy loads. The biggest thing is know you have a heavy load on and dont think you are going to handle like a sports car making abrupt manuvers. Not saying that is what happens, but it definity could have. That is where experience comes into play. Sometimes it is better to rearend someone and keep everything contained than it is to scatter the whole road with carnage. just my opinion.

I have a military trailer with a lunette eye too and use it all the time. I'm not saying they cause any problems, but once a problem develops it's a little harder to get under control. The military uses that style hitch for obvious off road reasons, and they don't travel faster than 50 or 55 mph in the convoys.

Here's the story on the dozer crash:

the Dodge CTD that was doing the towing was 'cut off' and had to swerve to avoid a 'mystery' vehicle that kept going and didn't stop. (It's always someone else's fault when you interview drivers after the fact).

The dodge lost his trailer and load when they were pullng the evasive manuver. Not sure on the weight of the trailer, but definately looks to be right at or a bit over the tow rating of the SRW 2500. From what he said, he tows similar loads all the time with no problems. No fatalities, but it was definately a close call.
