Mobil 1

My Ford Dealer service manager says they are changing a lot of diesels to Mobil 1 synthetic oil. How good is this oil. Would I be happy with it in a 1999 7.3 PSD with about 100,000 miles on it? It has had Chevron Delo 400 15-40 in it since new.
Another note, the new Delo 400 has a green tint to it when dumping from the engine after 3000 miles. It is not antifreeze, just a strange oil colour.
I'm in BC and travel in below zero weather for a few months every winter.
Thanks
Bob Bates

Any Synthetic will certainly have better cold flow characteristics than a dino!

On the diesels where motor oil is running thru the injectors, you will need to make sure the oil is diesel rated.

The newer diesels, I have read, use motor oil to help activate the injectors. The oil is under high pressure and will foam if it is regular car oil. So, you need diesel rated oil, dino or syn, if you have a newer diesel.

I believe the Powerstrokes do require diesel rated oil. I think the older 7.3 diesel does not. But, I AM NOT a diesel owner, just read about this kind of stuff.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

You are correct, they need diesel rated oil, including the 7.3.
Mobil 1 is diesel rated, just wanted to know what everybody thinks of it. I can't get Schaeffers that easily here, but our Ford dealer is selling Mobil 1 for the ford diesels I don't know if its better than Rotelle Synthetic either.

It's another personal choice. The ones mentioned are all synthetic. I know a lot of truckers and they mostly use Delo 400. But that might be Delo has been around the trucking business for decades and more readily available.

Delo 400, Valvoline Max Blue(Cummins factory fiil I have heard), Mobil 1, Shell Rotella is also a good oil. You could switch to 5W40 synthetic in the winter as well. All diesels should use diesel rated oil.

Where abouts in B.C do you live?

The newer CJ-4 rated Delo 400 "LE" is loaded with Boron (over 500 ppm), which likely explains the green hue when drained.

Delo's CJ-4 additive package is one of the best of the CJ-4 HDEOs regardless of price. If you are regularly seeing below zero temps, you may want to consider Delo 400 LE Synthetic 5W-40 if you can locate some.

If not, I would check out Delvac 1 ESP, which is NOT the same oil as Mobil 1 TDT.

CITGO also makes a quality diesel oil for slightly less than average pricing of brand labels. We have used CITGO oil in our fleet of trucks at work, and they deliver excellent results for severe service driving conditions.

I also read once where CITGO diesel oil is one of the better oils in holding combustion by-products in suspension, while still giving excellent lubrication and engine wear protection at the end of it's recommended oil change interval.

CITGO sucks, and is a company I would never support in any way.

I think I know what you're refering to. I saw a list which is floating around the web detailing where gasoline & oil comes from...and where Citgo products come from.

I agree with Big Bad and I'm not a "politician".

Citgo is Owned By Venezuela Whose President Is Anti-U.S.
Citgo is the American subsidiary of the state-run oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA.
