I currently have 5 vehicles that I look after with OBD II (soon to be 6) and am looking at different scanners. I am looking on evilbay (but if anyone knows of decent ones that I can get from NAPA, National Auto, Advanced Auto, etc let me know)
Here are 2 I found on evilbay
2002 F250 V10
2001 Exp Sport Trac 6 cyl
2000 F150 4.6 V8
2004 F150 5.4 V8
1999 Chrysler 300
2001 Ford Escape
Soon some kind of Expedition 2002 or newer
I am looking at being able to read codes for all of these, but would also like some basic diagnostic items as well. Dont know if any of these are able to change tire sizes or not, but if some do, I would like to know that as well.
i use this AutoXray scanner. it gives reads stored and pending trouble codes, and will also give diagnostic data for use in monitoring real time driving data.
and with the pricing deals you can get at amazon, is is a good deal also. Amazon.com: AutoXray EZ-Scan 4000 Scanner: Automotive
if this one i already sold, just google AutoXray EZ-Scan 4000, and then look for the amazon listings, and look for the cheapest listing.
i got my last one 3 weeks ago for $125.95 delivered.
I've got an AutoXray I bought about 4 years ago for almost $400. It's nice, but I wonder how much you have to spend for one that will actually tell you what you need to replace. It narrows it down to a circuit , but still requires a lot of testing different components. Too many things cause the same code. Or could be I'm too dumb to interpet the info.

You will need one with CAN protocol capability so avoid older, used units.
If you wand extended real time data, plan on $250+
Take a look at the ScanGauge ........reads codes, resets CEL, etc, in addition to giving abunch of real time readouts.......I'm just waiting to get the $$$ together to get one.......

That one looks nice to use as a one vehicle scanner since it does fuel economy and stuff. I just wonder how much of a PITA it is to change for each vehicle. I like the ones with the big screen. A friend of mine has a snap on scanner, but I hate bugging him to use it. And now that I have all those other vehicles that I can scan, I would like a easier to read screen.
The ones I listed do the live data as well and both also CAN protocols. NAPA sells the Innovus, but wants about $50 more for it.

I have the earlier model, Scangauge I. It takes about five minutes the first time to set it up for a vehicle if you want to do the fuel economy and trip stats. I imagine it would be faster for the second vehicle. I never had much interest in using the trip statistics, I have a working fuel gauge and trip odometer.
As far as a code reader, I just used it on #2 daughter's mustang today. Plug it in, turn it on, press the scan and code button, then one button press per code. Simple and fast.
Scren size on mine is limited, and the newer model is a little better. However, you aren't using this to watch DVDs!
I got the Scangauge II for my truck when I was having intermittant Check engine light problems on my truck. It also allowed me to set my gauges when I did the overlay deal. I can use it on my 2005 Mercury and my 2001 Taurus. It has worked fine for my needs.
