I used to play drums. Bobby Fuller who sang "I Faught the Law" from years past.... his drummer George taught me. George is not the one who made the record with Bobby but he was Bobby's full time drummer. Anyway.... I taught my brother and he started a rock and roll band and I go goed for them. It was a lot of fun, but hard work. He was an excellent drummer till his Harley accident which left him brain injured the past 18 years. Please don't drink and drive.
I also played bass. I think that the drums and bass are the heart and soul of any song.
I used to drum full time in a group...did it for 15 years but decided that as I age, I'm 56, I didn't want to spend my weekends drumming in some smoke filled honky tonk. Besides the fact that I had a family.
My favorite drummer(s) would have to be Sandy Nelson, followed by Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts and Dave Clark. Yes....all 60s drummers but they were great in my opinion. Plus I learned from them back then by playing along with their records. That's where I honed my sense of timing and I have been told that my left hand on the snare is like a metronome. I'm not a fancy drummer but pride myself in keeping good timing. Sometimes, simple is best.
I still bang around on my kit and will come out of retirement to help someone out but no way I would ever go back to playing full time.
well my daughter ash is a master Percussionist and played, Bass, snare and quints for all her school elementary thru college but she doesnt play set very well.
I think John Rutsey was the greatest drummer of all times.

Sorry to hear about your brother's accident.
And you're right, about the bass and drums being the heart and soul of any song.

Rutsey's replacement was Neal Peart, another excellent drummer.
I was always partial to the drummers of the sixties, like Keith Moon,
John Bonham, etc, but my favorite is Ginger Baker.
I remember, as a kid, watching on TV the likes of Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich,
and Louie Bellson, all gone now.
hoosierbaby64, cool that you daughter is a master percussionist.
I wouldn't mind taking up drumming-----------just for fun.

Dave Clark, John Bonham and Billy Cobham are some that i like. My dad played drums and sometimes the bass in his band called the Certified Five. They played a lotta songs from groups in the 60's and 70's.
My brother is a drummer and I am a guitar player and we have spent the last 17 years playing together. He is an excellent drummer and caught a lot of flack. Things like calling a band 3 musicians and a drummer.
My favorite drummer is Matt Apts (Gov't Mule, Dixie Dreggs). BAD A## drummer
Thanks sierraben for your condolences about my brother, Bo. Accidents change a lot of lives.
I bring out the old Gretch set once in a while and bust a beat. I really get in the mood to play again when I do, but who would hire an old female hippy type chick to play in a band. LOL. I still hear Sandy Nelsons songs in my head after all these years probably because my brother could mock his every move, so I heard his stuff a lot. I remember when Bo had a 12 hour gig and the last song the crowd requested was 'Wipe Out'. He always amazed me.
Been there and done it all..You have to live out of a suitcase and spend many hours riding from town to town to know whats its like to be a pro. Quit when I met the wife and had to pick her or the band........band lost
A lot of people think that being in a band is glamorous, fun and easy. But it is very hard work, and not always so glamorous.
And a lot of people think that it would easy to play drums, till I try to get them moving each one of their four limbs at different speeds at the same time. They soon changed their minds. My brother also sang, and they often even had him manipulating the light buttons with his foot, and he even did a few tricks with the sticks. Would this be considered multi tasking? My sister doesn't think so.
