have a 1999 powerstroke and buddy tells me the turbo bearings are going out due to the whinning its doing need some input on turbos if needed i want to upgrade the turbo to the htt big bad wolf turbo is that a good one or what do you all recommend
He says its bad because its whining? Oh boy...
Let the motor cool, pull the intake off- now you can see the turbo wheel. Grab the nut (the one on the turbo, not the ones in your pants!!! ) and try to move the turbo wheel/shaft. A little side to side play is okay (as long as the wheel doesn't hit the housing) but ANY in and out play is bad.
Start from there, then we can start talking upgrades. If you want anything other than a D66, you'll need a bunch of late model parts too (pedistal, up pipes, collector, plenums, boots, spyder pipe).

Here I am sitting in my living room while my wife is sleeping on the couch. She must hear me and wonder what in the hell I am cracking up about.
Yeah, I know it's not for sure, but maybe the OP can fill us in..... That would give us some more options. IMHO, a rebuild kit from Ron's Turbo Service is the way to go. Gut the EBPV & pedestal, and it will be like a brand new turbo!
