Im building a high performance 460 for my 81 f250 4x4, plan on using it for offroading and some truck pulling. I am thinking of installing an oil cooler out in front of the radiator by using a remote filter kit, would this be a good idea? also there will probably be 5-6 feet of line, should I plumb in some sort of check valve? and If so were?
i just put a 460 in my f150 and used the remote oil kit from L & L.
Franklin is correct. It is built into the filter, at least the Motorcraft one. I am assuming other brands too.
I had my lines mixed up and it would not let oil get back to the motor. I was reading 0 psi when i started.
So, i reversed the lines (apparently i was trying to send oil the wrong way through the filter) and had 65 psi.
Just be carefull that you pay attention to which ports you are hooking your lines up to. and if you dont have pressure, try switching them.
Most filters I know of for automotive use have the check valve, it's just some of them are not very high quality. Do you remember the guy on the internet years ago that did the oil filter study and cut all the filters open? You can probably still find that somewhere, even though I think Fram was out to get him.

FWIW, the Motorcraft FL1A turned out to be a decent filter and the Fram is junk (no supprise to me, I've had a Fram filter that had a check valve problem and made my 351 rattle and knock at startup. Not cool.)
The Motorcraft filter uses a metal check back valve while the Fram uses one that is made out of cardboard or something stupid and doesn't work. I had one on my inline and thought I lost a lifter but next time I used a Motorcraft filter and it stopped.
