It appears most 2008 Job 1 trucks have an external filter. When the Job 2 trucks came out they switched to an internal filter in the pan. I beleive Job 2 started around mid summer of 2007. My Job 1 was built in April or May 2007 and has the external filter.
i think the early o8's still had external trans filters but ford did away with them. my truck is an 08 superduty, built in july and does not have the external filter. even the ones with the external filter have a filter in the pan.
the remote filter is a bypass filter, only filters about 10% of the fluid and returns it back to the transmission without it being cooled.
Correct, job 1 trucks have the external. In the pan is just a screen that I believe you clean, not replace. Job 2 and newer only have the internal filter in the pan. I think there is also a difference in some of the external filters because the manual has 2 different part numbers for external filters.

Nope, the internal filter is a filter, not a screen. There is no way to clean it, either, but if it's got enough junk in it that it needs cleaning the trans is already junk.
