I never used anything but Motorcraft oil filters for about 15 years, and never had one "rust out". Maybe it was defective to begin with. Maybe some other bizarre thing happen to it.
i picked up a MC 820s filter about a yr ago that when you shined a light into the filter, through the tread hole, the metal had a rust/chalking brown color on the metal. never used it, have it sitting in the shop.
but i never seen or heard a filter rust out, kinda has be from the outside of the filter to the inside since oil is a rust preventer. i dont know though.
