I am trying to find a techician that is experienced with these trucks. I have a 99.5. I think it is making some strange sounds but would like someone that is far more experienced than I to look at/listen to it. Fuel mileage hasn't changed, but it seems to have a tapping sound it didn't have in the summer. Truck only has 63K on it. I just don't want it to turn into something worse, if it is anything. I hate to take it to the dedalership and I know there are a lot of guys here that are very experienced with these trucks. I live near Frederick, in Mount Airy in Maryland. Thanks in advance, Tom
When dealing with noise there is a big difference between fuel knock and valve noise we all would be guessing!Do you have a video with sound that you can put on this site might help.
Maybe there are some 7.3 owners here that are close to you in MD and they could help you check it out. You might also check in the MD FTE chapter. The guys and gals here are some of the best 7.3 "technicians" around. I depend on them for information before I set foot in a shop or dealership.
Husker,
I did post on the MD. Chapter group. I am a member there also. What you said is exactly why I come here. I don't want to go to the dealership. I have already had too many problems with them. This is one of those things that someone actually has to hear. I know nobody can diagnose it from a description. I used to be an ASE mech. a long time ago, but never worked on diesels.
i am in southern pa, i used to work in mt airy, if you need a hand let me know, i am a bit swamped this weekend but i will see what i can do.
can we get a little more description of your problem?
Tom, wish I was close and could help out. It may be one of those things that someone else will hear and say "yeah that's normal." or "Man, you have a problem." I hope the former is the deal or at least something simple.
Thanks Joe, I'm like you. Stretched a little thin this weekend also. A little more about the problem. I noticed it when it started getting colder this fall. It almost sounds like a rod knock in a gas motor. My fuel mileage has not gone down, the truck seems to be running okay. It starts fine. It may have a slight vibration when sitting still. I changed the oil 2 weeks ago to synthetic hoping that would help. It really doesn't seem to have changed. It doesn't appear to be a loud when it is warmer outside. Not that it's really been warm lately. I am going to see what it does this Sunday when it's supposed to be 70 around here. I don't drive it everyday. As a matter of fact, the truck only has 63K miles on it.
