I had a 6 psi electric pump installed in my '76 with a 460 and it worked fine and kept up with no problem. To be honest with you, I ended up going back with a manual pump. I found the electric pump to be too much of a PITA if not wired correctly. I had mine wired so it came on when the ignition was on. I had a switch so I could shut it off so it would not overfill the bowl while I was trying to start it. Once it started, I would turn it back on.
The right way to wire it up is so the pump has power while the engine is cranking, then when the key is released, it gets power while the engine is running. This should be based on oil pressure so another oil pressure sending unit needs to be installed then hooked to a relay which powers the pump.
thanks
the problem i have is that, seems like the pump isnt keeping the bowl full. the pump i have is a 5-9 lber i'll drive along fine for 200 yards and then i stall for lack of fuel. i mounted it on the fender wall. i'm thinking it is too far from the tank (about 6-7 ft) and may be too much above the tank (2 ft) what do you think?
Mine was installed along the frame rail quite close to the tank. The electric pump was installed to solve a fuel delivery problem. It ended up being crap in the tank had plugged the screen on the fuel tube. Cleaned it out, and it runs great now with the manual pump.
Mine is on the frame rail just under the rear shock this way you get a good gravity feed !! Most electric pumps are made to push fuel and not suck from the tank while running mount it below the fuel source and dont forget to use 12ga wire and relay i have been useing this setup with blue holley for 3 years and no trouble P.S. use filter before pump and one up by the engine
If I remenber right ,it's better to push the fuel than to pull it.Most if not all FI has the fuel pump in the gas tank. Also carbs should be about 4-6 of presure cause of the neddle and seat.
thanks everybody
i had a two pronged problem
i relocated the pump as close to the tank as i could. and as low as i could
also when a pump says 5.5-9 lbs it depends on the voltage; which one you get. before i dont think i had it wired to a full 12 volt source.
now shes runnin like a champ. thanks again
i had thought of changing my fuel pump over once but i decided that if it ain't broke dont fix it. i have some other issues with my 460 that maybe you guy would know about. i posted the 460 knocking at your door in the virginia chapter. any help would be appreciated. thanks kyle.
