One other thing...you said there was a "clicking" sound...that's probably your lifters not having enough pressure to pump them up.
As long as it wasn't a "clacking" sound, you should be OK. Depending on the condition of your oil and the junk that was in it, you might want to do a cheap oil and filter change, warm it up for a few minutes each day for about a week (varying your RPMS but not too high), and then do a GOOD oil and filter change to make sure that any residue gets flushed out.
I'm pretty sure it was just a clicking sound was a couple days ago and when i heard it i shut her down immediately. What would a "clacking" sound indicate?
Clacking usually indicates a problem with your rod bearings.
Since you shut it down immediately when you heard the noise, I think you'll be OK.
After you change the oil and filter, disconnect the coil-to-distributor wire and crank the engine over until you get some oil pressure built up. Then reconnect the wire and start as normal. This way you'll have some good oil circulated to your bearings before they are put under load.
I've heard that products like that could gum up the engine with sludge. Do you know if this is true? Someone told me to put in STP oil treatment or maybe something called Rislone too.
oh by the way there appears to be no damage done to the engine. but the timing is off. the housing that the distributor cap sits on wiggles about 1/4 inch either way, i may use some epoxy to hold it still so i can set the timing this evening. she was backfiring yesterday after the oil change and start up.

Why the hell would you want to put epoxy on it?! Find why it's loose and tighten it down the correct way. You may have to change the timing later on...but you can't, because you epoxied it! Do you really want to do that?
