needing some input, my truck has been leaking p/s fluid terrible im talkn about every 2 days havn to put some in it because its dry, i located the leak itlooks to be coming out the place around the pitman arm.
is there a seal around this?
how would i replace it?
or is the box cracked?
i cant really tell as i havnt pulled it off/down and im not sure how to do that either
thanks guys
a haynes manual or equivelant should explain it pretty simple. I did mine today it was a matter of taking lose the rag joint on the steering shaft via 1 bolt and then takign tie rod lose from the pitman arm using a pickly fork to knock the tierod lose. then there are 3 5/8 head bolts on the frame just inside your driver tire. that should get you started you will need a pitman arm puller if you plan to pull it.
i would try some Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak before you use your time and energy to pull the system down. its pretty cheap, and worked really well for the seal leak in my 76 f100. is guaranteed to stop seal leaks and whining or your money back.... i sound like add... but i wouldnt advise it if it didnt work.
dang i should have tired that stuff before! I briefly looked for something like that but i couldnt believe that they had it. Oh well lifetime warranty on this new unit.
yeah. you can get it at walmart in the automotive care section. should be around the fuel additives and WD-40. it even reduced or eliminates whining, and, as anyone who drives a ford knows, ford pumps need that in a bad way...

U can get the pitman seal at most autoparts stores for around 20 bucks. Renta pitman arm puller, get a 1 5/16 socket and some snap ring pliers. Take off the center nut, pull the pitman arm,and pry the snapring out. Then start the truck and turn the steering wheel to full right and the old seal should pop right out. Just make sure u clean the groove that the snaap ring goes in and make sure the rings seated
so i should get the lucas and try it.
i dont know if thats where its leaking but im pretty sure, maybe a picture would help you guys see what i think? ill post up a few

definitely try the lucas. if that doesnt work, THEN its time for tear-down.
If that does not work, don't waste your time replacing the seal unless you know the steering box was recently replaced. I replaced my steering box a couple of months ago and my steering is now a lot tighter. Good luck with the stop leak, hope it fixes your problem. Let us know how it works out.
