its a CCV , Crank Case Ventilation. its on Driver side valve cover, just under your air intake tube, where its connected, you can search for CCV reroute, and plenty of sponsors have kits to do so, or you can do it yourself, leave turbo alone it will be fine. sooner you do a ccv reroute the better, and your turbo will tank you for it, it wont have to breathe the oil vapors from your motor..

There is no maintenance on the turbo. Just keep up with regular oil changes and you should be good to go.

As for the reroute of the valve, that is the CCV. There is a doghouse looking vent on the driver's side valve cover, and a hose that runs directly into the intake right before the turbo. By rerouting the hose (ie vent to open atmosphere) and capping off the hole from the vent inlet on the intake, you keep the oil from misting into the turbo and intake. The only problem with this oil is that it seeps through the intercooler boots, causing the engine to stay dirty all the time. Also, oily boots tend to blow off easier. With the CCV reroute, your engine bay stays cleaner, and boots stay on better.

The CCV does not affect turbo performance at all.

I had a small puddle inside the intake under the turbo wheel before I did the CCV mod. Hopefully now, it won't have that oily mess anymore.

Here's a writeup on the CCV mod.

The turbo is oiled by engine oil. If that's what you meant by "oil in your base" then the short answer is yes

Correct. Pull the turbo out and you'll see the oil passages in the turbo as well as running right through the middle of the pedestal.

...but the oil in the intake and the turbo wheel is from the OEM CCV system routing the crankcase blow-by into the intake tube. Hence the reason for the mod.

Ok, on a different vehicle I used to own enthusiasts didn't reroute the CCV tube for lubrication reasons. I understand that the CCV tube is there to provide a vacuum that sucks oil into the head of the motor. If the CCV is capped off, the intake wouldn't provide suction and oil wouldn't make it to the head to lube the cams, etc. Wouldn't this be bad? Or does oil make it to the head via another method?

hummmm...

No, the CCV is there to vent the Crank case vapors... and only that, oil is fed to the heads under pressure from the LPOP...

Like Joe said, the CCV is only to vent vapors.

Our Powerstrokes are nearly identical to the International T444E engines, and International vents the crankcase to open atmosphere, instead of to the intake.

Most people that mod the CCV are just doing the same thing that International does from the factory.
