Need help removing the head

I have a 1997 F250 7.3L. My boyfriend went to remove a bolt while replacing the fuel pump and broke it off. Now he needs to take the head off to remove the rest and would like some pointers in doing so. Help please! Thanks!

I just talked to him and I quess it wasn't a bolt it was the pin at the bottom of the pump that goes to the cam shaft. It broke off at the O ring.

It hasn't actually fell in but it is stuck right where it broke off. He doesn't want to drill it out for fear of metal shavings. That was why he was going to take it all apart to get it out.

Pulling the heads won't give him any access. BUT one thing he can do it to put a socket and ratchet on the crank shaft pully bolt and rotate the engine by hand. That pieces ride on an eccentric and you should be able to push it up and out of the hole some with that eccentric.

I broke one once and I was able to get a hold of it with something and pull it out.

Definitely be patient with it, if it drops in the motor he will be pulling the motor out of the truck to fish it from the oil pan.

Thank you all. A combo of all the suggestions worked. Now lets hope he can get the new pump in without any problems.
