Could anyone post pictures of how to wire up a manual gp switch on the newer style controler? I have a 93 non-turbo. I have all the gps testing good now but I would like to have manual control. Does the newer style controler still use the relay on the passeger side behind the battery or is it part of the controler?
Look at the picture of the new style controller above.
Remove the white wire from the relay.
Now add a wire to the terminal and run it inside the cab and attach it to a momentary switch on one terminal.
On the other terminal of the momentary switch attach a wire and run it to a good electrical ground.
Conversion done.
Opperation, turn the key to on.
Push the momentary switch for 10 seonds.
Start the engine.
Same principal about more or less glow time I posted above are still true.
The big difference is the old system needs power supplied to the relay for it to operate. The relay coil is grounded through the black wire on the relay.
The new style system has power applied to the relay when the key is in the on position, so it needs a ground supplied to complete the circuit.
Thanks Dave, sounds easier then the mod for the old style. I'm going to try it and I'll report back as to how it worked out and if it fixes my hard start. When I was working on it yesterday I acidently grounded out the lug that has the gp wires going to it to a hot on the controler. It wasn't much but do you think I could have ruined it to the point that the manual override won't fix my problem?

If the glow plugs are cycling and the engine starts after the light turns off, I think you are ok. By what you are describing, the relay itself is working fine.
Thanks for all the help Guys! I ran a new ground from the controler/relay back to the battery and a manual control to a switch in the cab, starts like a charm. Boy is it cold blooded though, I had to hit the switch for a few seconds after it started to keep it running but it starts and stays running without cranking it forever.
Hey guys. I just wanted to let you know that this all worked out perfect. I bought a new set of the ZD-1A's GP's, some new wiring, a new spring loaded toggle switch, and an ABS plastic mount for the switch. I made a custom little metal bracket for the switch to mount to, and then I mounted everything up, finished the wiring, and installed the new glow plugs. It fired up on the first try, and now I am a happy camper once again. The hardest part was determining where I wanted to mount the switch/bracket inside the cab.
Thanks again for all your help and especially Dave.
