Classic irony. Driving home with my wife last night I was just saying how my '95 PSD had been a good truck for us with 260k miles on it and running good, I even patted the dash for effect. Not 60 seconds later the speedometer starts jumping all around, and I notice it's not shifting well. Just my luck.
As always, searching this forum has been very helpful and answered most of my questions. It sounds like I have a PSOM problem, and I found an article on here about how to replace those. So here's some questions -
Electronic Speedometer Service will repair it for a price of $195 plus shipping and I see that you can also buy used ones at Car-Part.com and on eBay, probably for around $100.
If I get it repaired, it will still show my odometer reading, correct? Otherwise I'll have to search for one that is close? Which route would you all recommend, and have I diagnosed this correct? Or is it more likely the VSS or something else?
Harley- most likely your PSOM is shot, but before you spend the money on it do as plowhand said and clean the VSS in the rear diff. If when you pull the VSS out there are large chunks of metal on it you are probably looking at rebuilding the rear end. Also check the wires going to the VSS for any wear spots.
The PSOM stores mileage, so when you swap your truck will show whatever miles the donor rig had. When mine went in my old 95 I dug around hard and found a used one within a few hundred miles of what my truck had for $125.
Here's the part where I admit ignorance - will I have a hard time locating and removing the VSS if I don't even know what the first two letters of the acronym stand for? There can't be that many electrical leads going into my rear differential, so I'll probably be able to figure it out...

Vehicle Speed sensor. On the rear differential right on top. One bolt to remove and it will pull straight up. Check for metal fuzz on it. Check the connection for water or corrosion. Maybe even just buy a new one to stick back in there are cheap.

Fine gray fuzz on the sensor is normal, large pieces of metal are not. A new one won't hurt anything, but if it doesn't solve your problem you'll probably have a hard time taking it back (most places don't allow returns on electrical).

Update. I pulled and replaced the VSS, but only because it was so inexpensive, I didn't see any sign of metal particles, which is nice.
Got a used PSOM from the junk yard on Saturday and installed it, and everything seemed to work fine so I went ahead and replaced the dash cover. Thought I was all set until I drove in this morning and realized one of the bulbs in there is burned out and it's hard to see my speedometer in the dark. I still have the old PSOM with good bulbs, but I hate to tear into everything just to replace a stupid bulb. Oh well.
