In my quest of all things Fordly, something else has decided to appear from the bowls of my engine bay(besides the sand in the power steering thing)It started a week ago, stopped and is back. I'll go to start it, the starter will attempt to turn the engine, then spin freely. I usualy smell gas afterwards. This'll happen 4 or 5 times before it does actualy start. I'm thinking it's the starter relay but I want to be sure before I fork over $50 to Advance Auto for a new starter.
How about a bad Bendix spring or Starter drive which ever you wish to call it, on the starter. Sounds like the sprag is shot. From what you describe you can buy the drive & install it or buy a starter. Probably the starter would be the way to go IMO.
sounds like the bendix is kicking back in,too early.could be from age,or a bad/corroded connection.take it off,and have it tested.your local autozone/advance can put it on their tester.eventually it's going to leave you sitting.
yeah, that's what i'm affraid of. I was trying to narrow it down to either the starter relay or something in the carburator since I was also smelling gas, leaning more towards the relay. Parts should be made to last forever lol.
I am not sure they can test the bendix at the store. It has a one-way clutch bearing in it, that lets the starter turn the flywheel, but will not let the flywheel turn the starter and burn it up if someone holds onto the keyswitch too long. When these go bad, they get intermittent, and will not let the starter drive the flywheel, even though the gear is engaged in the teeth.
Ya i dout they will be able to tell if the bendix is bad at the auto store... That would probabley have to be removed to inspect it...There just going to run a hot wire to it the same way we would with a battarey & jumper cables..But it sounds like hes going to replace the relay..Lew
i dont know about where you live but here we have several electronics repair shops that work on and rebuild starters and altenators. if you can find one of these shops it will save you some dough. i know i had them rebuild my alt. and was about 1/3 the price of a new one and you will still have your oem part. just a thought?
