My starter went out yesterday. I picked up a used one at the junkyard today and put it on, which was an easier swap than I expected.
The truck cranks over faster than it ever has before, but there is a noticeable motor whine when you shut the engine down. I don't believe it was there before. My guess is that the bendix isn't retracting. Damn.
You might take it off again and try cleaning/greasing the throwout gear. There isn't really a bendix solenoid on these, it's just the torque that throws the gear back in. If it isn't retracting it's probably just getting stuck somehow.
