Hi Folks,
This one is for you '48 - '50 panel truck experts... I found a '48 to '50 panel truck within 30 miles of me that is sitting out in a field. I called a number about it and I am supposed to get a call about it when the owner returns from a vacation in FL. I know very little about it yet. I have not seen it up close. All I know is that it is not wrecked. I decided to post a thread here to get some idea what to look for and what they are worth. I'm not into this particular year but maybe it will grow on me or make for good trading stock. I will just have to wait and see what it is like if the guy calls and wants to sell it. the person I talked to was his SIL and she seemed to think he would sell it. Of course that doesn't mean a lot but it is more encouraging than a big nasty NO. I fully expect a number of things like rust, no engine or a bad engine. I would be happy if the body and chassis were uasble. In a way I am kind of hoping it does have missing drive train components. that would make it fit my budget better. But hey, you never know. Any suggestions???
Front rusts the same as any Ford of the era, the floor is not really attached to the sides, it had/has a seal that soaks water like a sponge so it can rust down the sides and around the fender wells.
No engine tranny and repairable (Sheet metal work) body 500-1500 depending on how bad - it is or you want it

Thanks Dick,
It's not killing me to get it. If He calls I'll go look at it and post pictures. If he doesn't call he doesn't want to sell it so it makes no difference. If the price is right I might get it for trading stock.
The major things to look for, like Dick mentioned, the the rust in the rear quarters. They tend to rust around the rear wheel wells, above the wheel and in the rear corners. The flannel like material they used for sealing the area makes a great sponge. The rear doors are next to impossible to find in decent shape. Good rear doors are almost as hard to find as a stock driver's seat, or the most coveted item, a stock passenger seat. Most panels weren't ordered with the passenger's seat. If the panel had a stock driver's seat it was most likely replaced with a more comfortable or usable bucket seat.
I've got to see pictures of this truck. Also, let us know the asking price, I'm curious what the guy is going to ask for it.
I second what Bob said, especially about the seats and rear doors. If the truck has decent rear doors, get it! Decent doors alone could bring in $500 or more. If it has at least one original seat, get it. I've seen the seat(s) sell on eBay for upwards of $300 (depending on condition). The three Panel trucks that I bought for parts, I paid from $200-800 each. Most were without the drivetrain and mostly disassembled. However, I have passed on quite a few because the seller thought they were worth their weight in gold.
A few years ago, right after I bought the 51 Panel, I had a chance to buy another 51 Panel from an old-timer. This one was all stock and complete. Had the original seat and the rear doors were ok. It also had a flathead V8. The guy wanted $800 for the Panel. I low-balled him an offer of $300 and he countered at $500. I was still new in this hobby and had no idea what the Panel is worth in parts. I passed on the deal and now kick my self in the butt everytime I think about it.
If you can, post pictures and I'm sure that we can collectively come up on a value.
