hey everyone, i've got a 95 stroke and i am trying to change the fuel filter. it looks old as hell and i doubt its ever been changed, but my problem is this
i can not get the cap to spin. the 1/2" ratchet hole gave out on me and rounded and i broke 2 fins. i've tried tapping it with a hammer and screw driver and it wouldnt budge at the strength i wanted to stop hitting it at, i tried ratchet, i've tried two sets of pliers...i dont know what else to try without breaking anything. this is my DD and only vehicle so please help.
i just put a long screw driver in between the fins and twist it. i wouldnt worry too much about breaking a fin though. the majority of places that sell fuel filters also sell them with new tops for a few dollars more. but my first question should be, are you having trouble getting it to spin to come off or to go back on?
Tapping sometimes doesn't work. Constant pressure is you best option. I have a very large sey of channel lock pliers. Put them on and apply steady pressure on it till it comes loose. A strap wrench may also help too.
ok well the screw driver idea wont work. there isnt an opening in the middle. there is a spot for a 1/2" ratchet. channel locks may work but they are 30 min away :/
ok awesome guys thanks. phillips, im trying to get the old one off. i'll try the screwdriver pry and get back to ya
the reason im asking is because you said the old one looked old, like it hadnt ever been changed before. i was just wondering how you could see the old one if you couldnt get the lid off. then i figured you may be having trouble getting the lid back on once you changed the old filter. if its having trouble going back on, the answer is never to force it in because its probably just cross threaded.
Can you cut a groove in the center piece with a 3" air grinder or similar cutter so you can lay a screwdriver across it?
Oh - and you ARE trying to turn it counterclockwise right?
