IF you can locate an NOS (New Old Stock) gear selector lever, that would probably be best, since it would have ZERO use/wear on it.

Conversely, the wrecking yard '69 F100 I just pulled a headliner out of, to put in my '69 F100 Ranger, still had its steering column/gear selector lever in it. --I could go take a look at it, to see what kind of condition it's in. --and now that I think about it, I know where a '68 F250 CS is that I'm pretty sure has a gear selector lever in it too.

That's prolly why my Ford slide didn't even mention it. Section A72, page 1. jan 75 issue. Glad you remembered it.

Ultra Ranger's 1969 shift lever (C9TZ-7210-B) replaced C5TZ-7210-W then was also replaced by D0TZ-7210-G .. then it was replaced by D3TZ-7210-C

For those unaware: FoMoCo is notorious for updating/replacing 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY YEAR .. more often than women change their minds!

I have a 1972 ford f100 in my transmission shop. It has a bolt on rear yoke setup. The speedo drive gear was missing on the output shaft. I ordered an 8j17285 drive gear and a 8j17288 spacer and installed. The speedo still doesn't work. the cable and driven gears are all new. speedo cluster needle moves when turning the brass button where cable slides into it. I pulled the cable back out of the extension housing and using a mirror and flashlight, the speedo drive gear doesn't protrude into the opening. if I lay a 6 inch rule into the hole the drive gear sits even or slightly lower than the bullet hole in the extension housing. Reading on here the steel gear is only used till 1971. is there a taller steel gear? I am confused a little here. Thanks in advance for any help. Tim Haslett

8J is the wrong DRIVE gear. Which transmission does it have?

SOME C-6'S

Some C-6's used the spacer, some did not. If the gear turns freely when the output shaft is assembled without the spacer, you need it. NumberDummy will give you the correct numbers for the pieces.

It's a 1972 F100. The DRIVE gear spacer with C6 (if that's what trans it has), is not required after 1971 serial number L20,001 & 1972.

1973 and later C4/C6, the DRIVE gear is made as part of the output shaft.

thanks guys, it has a c6 transmission with bolt on yoke, no drive gear made into the shaft. truck is 1972, trans is a 1970. short extension housing with bolt on yoke. thanks. after looking at a parts book a page or so back the page shows an extension housing# 7a039 and a speedo housing #7085. this c6 has a newer aluminum 1 piece housing with a slide in cable with a small bracket on speedo cable and a 1/4 inch bolt to hold it in. thanks again for your help.

I need the rear axle ratio. If you don't know what it is, look on the 2nd line-far right-of the Warranty Plate for the AXLE code, post what it is.

Warranty Plate riveted to the left door face below the latch.
