info on remote start features

I'm looking to buy a factory remote start or possible aftermarket version for my 2008 F250. My questions are as follows:
1. can you turn off the truck as well as start it? I'm looking for a way to have delayed engine shut down after being driven hard. I was thinking i could leave the truck running and possibly shut it off later from inside the house.
2. What is involved in the installation.
3. Can you turn on heated seats from the remote or somehow make sure they are on during a cold morning start.
4. Are there any downsides to having this remote installed?

thanks,

I have had the Clifford remote start/alarm system of several of my vehicles. I like it a lot. I would have it professionaly installed.

Will start/stop truck remotely. Has a 60 second cool down. Not sure about the heated seats though.

i have had a few different brands. you can get an aftermarket a lot cheaper than a ford one. ford doesn't make them anyway. you can start and stop with the remote. when running most will run for a set time. if you don't get in it will shut the engine off. mine has a burgler alarm also. it will then arm that. have someone install it. you will need some extra thing that makes it work with the computerchip keys. they will provide that. i read where someone had the seats hooked up to theirs but don't know anything about that. mine has a turbo cooldown mode. it will run 1,3,5 min after then shut down. it is selectable. get one from a company that has been in business a long time. my first one has a life time warrenty, but the company doesn't exsist anymore. my ford dealer doesn't install them. maybe yours doesn't either. ask them who does and call them.

I've got a code alarm with remote start and turbo cool down. Very pleased. Also have instructions on how to connect you heated seats to your upfitter switch so it will turn the seat on when you remote start the truck... Got the directions from friend that lives up north. Haven't tried it yet, but the instructions are very well written. Install time approx 1 hour.....

Had the Ford brand installed. Dealer brought in a special instaler to put it in. I am VERY happy with mine. Adds a few security features that did not come with it initially. 2 programmable buttons, a few other featres that are pretty cool. After checking out the install instructions I gladly paid to have it done.

I have an AstroStart that was installed by the dealer when I bought the truck. They didn't do the neatest job under the dash, but it has never failed me. Installed it was about $400 with 2 5-button remotes. It is a 2-way model, so if I'm not sure of the status of the engine or doors, I can query the truck and it will tell me, locked and running etc.

One feature I would look for is to put the starter back in control of the truck, I use this almost daily when driving around town. This lets me stop, press the button and remove the keys, while not turning off the truck. I can go to the post office or bank and not have to start stop the truck at each place. I also use this on the road when fueling or at rest stops. This also lets me use the remote to then lock/unlock the doors when the start is in control. I'm sure there is some good marketing name for this feature, but I don't know what it is. This would also work as a turbo cool down feature.

Sorry, it's a bit hard to explain....

If I pull into the bank, I can put the truck in Park, foot off the brake, motor still running and press and hold the start button on the remote, the remote beeps and then I can turn the ignition off and pull the key to go in the bank. The motor stays running.

When I get back in the vehicle, put the key and turn to the on position and drive away.

And since the car starter is back in control of the motor, if you get delayed in the bank it will shut off after 18 minutes, it also monitors it for too high of idle, or someone tapping the brake

In ND (of all places) there is actually a law against leaving your vehicle running with keys in it. We have very little crime and we can definitely benefit from leaving the vehicle running when it's -20.

I have the Ford remote starter and love it. I have one transmitter for everything. No need to have seperate or generic transmitters. Plus my original transmitters still work too. It has a built in glow plug delay, works from 1,000 feet away, ties in to door locks, auto headlamps, factory alarm, etc. It will run 15 minutes and the shut off if nothing else has happened. You can also shut it off. When I get home from a long haul I go in the house and 5 minutes later kill the engine from my living room. If you forget, it will shut off in 15 minutes max.
Once you have a remote start you cant live without one. Its like a cell phone, microwave, or a computer. Use it one time and you are hooked for life.
I know there is a way to program other functions on the starter. Its on my "to do" list to see if the butt warmers can be incorporated. If not, routing the power through an upfitter switch is a good idea. I only have 1 upfitter left to fill and already have plans for it so if possible I want to find a way to do it with the starter.

I have the Ford remote as well. Do you restart yours after getting out or how do you activate the "Pit Stop" feature?

Thanks, Joe

"Pit Stop" feature, that is a good name for what I was trying to describe.

Just as brezh described. With the engine running, trans in Park, foot off the brake. Hit the same button you would start the engine with. Hold it for 2 seconds just like you would when starting it. The horn will chirp and the doors will unlock. After you get out of the truck (still running) you can lock the doors with the transmitter (if you so choose) and go pay for your fuel, or whatever. When you return to the truck, unlock it with the transmitter, insert the key and turn to the run position (just like you do when you initially started the truck) and everything is back to normal.

If you walk in to pay for fuel and are standing in line longer than you thought and want to turn the truck off..... just hold the start button for 2 seconds and it will turn off.

I use this all the time. If I am on a trip and need to stop for fuel I dont want to shut the truck off because it hasnt had time to cool down. So I pump, go pay, and back on the road without shutting the truck off.

I have the Viper 5901 and like it a lot. As some of the above have mention, it has the delay start (mine set at 25 seconds before it will start) remote start (will run for 12 minutes) and turbo cool down (will run for 5 minutes) and the "pit stop". I know i can easily program any of the the times listed above. I like the fact that it has a two way remote so I know if the system goes off. Assuming I am in range. It states the range is 1 mile but that is in wide open field. I figure the parking lot and inside Home Depot would still be in range.

I have found the prices jump all over. One place quoted me $900 for everything including install. I found another place for $500 installed. I would just make sure the place that is installing has been around and they have insurance.

Hope this helps
