Remote start

Hey guys, I'm looking at buying a remote start for my 05 Super Duty. I work in a cold place and have had problems with my door freezing shut on several occasions. The only way I can get home when I get off work in the morning is to wait until the sun beats down on my truck enough where I can crack the ice from sealing the door shut. One of these times I'm afraid I am going to break my door handle in the process.

1) Can someone give me a good reference for a good remote start?
2) Are they easy to install?
3) Is it a good idea to get the auto shut down feature to ensure the turbo cools down sufficiently? If so, does that feature complicate the install?

I've got a Viper 5900 2 way in my '05...I love it. I've had several remote starts over the years in my vehicles and the Directed Electronics brands (Viper, Python, Hornet, Clifford etc.) have been outstanding. I've been installing for several years, so they aren't difficult for me. You can find everything you need to install one online and in the install manual, but if you aren't at least familiar with automotive electronics, I wouldn't recommend this as your first project. Plus if you get a reputable shop to install it generally comes with a lifetime warranty. The auto shut down feature is simply programmed and adds nothing to the difficulty, but I doubt you will need it...I've never used mine.

The guys from Alaska recommended the AstroStart so that is what I have. No problems with mine and it is a qualified dealer install only. Nice thing about it is they don't butcher your wiring harness like I have seen on other units.

I've got a Python auto start (another DEI brand). It's been great to have in the cold Minnesota winters. I just set the crank wait time out to 15 seconds and it starts every time.

I would find out why the door is freezing shut, though. A little silicon-based lubricant lightly rubbed on the rubber seals can go a long way. Same with the locks.... try to get something in there that will prevent water from adhering to the surface. Just don't use WD-40!

I also have a Python remote start. I think the model is 580. I absolutely love mine and don't know what I would do without it. Mine was $299 installed and well worth the extra money for installation. The lifetime warranty is definitely great. The back of one of my remotes was broken, they replaced it for free, my crank time needed adjusted, again free. Its nice to be able to take it there for 15 min and get your problem fixed.

Thanks guys! I think I'll follow your advise and have it professionally installed. I would hate to mess with the electronics on these new high tech rigs. One mistake might cause unwanted problems down the road, and I have a hard enough time keeping up with these things. And a couple hundred bucks is much less than I assumed it would be to have it done.

If it were my old 74, well, that would be a different story. If I fry something on that old truck I would just rewire it. Now the 05, ehum... I don't think so.

Which ever brand you decide to go with ....make sure it has an aux output, then you can hook up the SEIC to it and remote idle up as well on those cold mornings. BTW...Ford has 3 different remote start systems available from your local dealer, they are made by Code Alarm and will not void any warranty related items if you have their dealer install it. Mine was approx. $400-$500 after installer came to my workplace and put it in. Also be aware if your truck has the PATS type key, you will need the additional module for that.

Yeah, I installed my own. It wasn't difficult to do... the biggest issue was dealing with the poorly written instructions. It listed a power connection as "extra". However, if you didn't hook it up the interface module wouldn't apply power to everything. Optional my A$$! Other than that, everything was straight forward.

The alarm/starter companies almost expect you to have a professional do the install. The only reason I did mine is I bought it out of Circuit City during their clearance.

Okay, you lost me with the acronyms. Please define SEIC and PATS. LOL

I don't think the 250 up had pats ,, it's a security thing ,,, and the seic is actually easy to find under "high idle mod " ,, a wire you can access to elevate your idle

My '07 F350 has it. You can tell if you have PATS by looking at the key...if it is unusually large (microchip in it) it's PATS.

I called my local Ford Dealership and asked about remote start prices. The parts guy told me that Ford doesn't provide remote start kits for my truck anymore at the parts department. He didn't have an answer to why, but together he and I figured that Ford must have had problems with those start kits for some reason. He suggested trying aftermarket.

Does anyone know if this is accurate?

I went wit a viper from DEI and no it doesn't care about any programmers it mimics the key start ,, if u do have pats or whatever they have a work around ,, but DEI is a best left to authorized dealer install , and that is how they are marketed ,, then you go back and fix the install and upgrade the sensors lol
