Me too, especially given that there is a nice set on eBay that will level a 2WD truck for like $70 or something. Not that I'd do that...I like my stance and have no desire to take it off-road.
Great Thread. I'm looking to lift my 2wd V10. 4wheelparts has the 6" ProComp for $961.00 But they said $1000.00 to install. I would rather pay $500.00 to install but I don't know how to go about finding a different installer that I can trust. I feel kind of weary of a guy showing up and installing. It might worth paying the grand for the piece of mind knowing that its being done by an established business with insurance. ....HMMM
The biggest issue with coil spacers is alignment, tire wear and possible vibrations due to increased stress. I went back to my shop and they added them to a F250 with no issues and are comfortable adding them to mine.
As most of you know, I was against gear changes since lifting my truck. I have decided to lift it some more (coil spacers) and first step is gearing. 3.73 and 35s are fine until you put some weight behind it. I tried to tow 7500 and that was the breaking point.....WEAK!!! So I now have 4.56 gears. With the 35s, I have an effective ratio of 4.10...much better than 3.38 (effective ratio of the 3.73) and when I go to a 37, I will have an effective ratio above 3.88, still better than where I was. I will not go wider than 12.50 tires hopefully so as not to increase resistance.
I would love a 4 inch lift on my 2wd 7.3.
Since none of the 4'' lifts will support the 7.3. Has anyone thought about having custom springs made?
Believe me, I thought about having that done!
I tried every route before finally getting my lift. You're better off with the lift kit because it has all the necessary hardware for the job. If you just had some custom springs made (which would be kinda cool) there are simply too many variables. You would probably have to have some of the lift hardware custom made as well to go along with the springs.
Here is my plan. I have measure the coils on my 06 F250 4wd 6.0 front and they are the same size as my 2002 7.3 2wd Ex. with one exception. They are 2.25" taller when compressed. I am not on the search for some stock F250 Springs.
Lifting the Ex 2" in the front, should be away of any other issue I might run into? Pitman arm? Alignment ect? I figure it would need an alignment at the very least.
6" is not as extreme as you think....It is only two inches taller than a standard 4wd Excursion. It's also the only way to go due to the weight of the 7.3.
With my 6 inch lift, I'm still able to fit in most parking garages maintain a nice, lifted look, and drive around without the feeling of it being too high or unbalanced.
On stock rims, you would use 315/75/16 for the tire size. My choice of tire: BFG All-terrains. In the 5 years I've been running them, they've given me execptional wear and performance be it wet, dry, or muddy.
As far as gearing: since you have a 7.3 like I do, use ONLY 4.10 gears! Your truck will tow and perform like it would stock, just with bigger tires. It also makes it considerably easier for your trans to handle the load of your truck and/or trailer.
Diesel motors aren't like gas engines where they benefit from using numerically higher gears. (especially if you tow) If you use something numerically higher (ex. 4.30 gears) it will take the truck out of it's powerband and you'll notice it running out of steam when you need it to go full steam ahead.
The only thing I don't recommend is using 4wheelonline.com for anything. They have the worst customer service, as a matter of fact, it's virtually non-existant. Go anywhere BUT 4wheelonline.com
Useful (old) thread. Thanks.
If I can't find someone that wants my liftkit, then I need to raise the rear of my truck another 2 inches. Easiest thing for me would be to pull the existing 1.5 inch spacer block and replace with a 3 or 4 inch spacer block. However, I'm having trouble finding the the right setup. Every site I've gone to so far shows the block kits for 4WD Excursions, but not 2WD like mine.
I'm guessing the 4WD axle tube is a different diameter than the 2WD axle tube. Anyone know where I can find the right blocks and/or what the proper holes size for the block itself needs to be along with the proper width u-bolt?
