New to the site and forums...have been lurking around to get info so now I'm in!!!
I bought my son a "beater"......thats what he wanted, but now we are both having thoughts of a body off restoration....On one hand, it will be something great to share between us, on the other I have not done anything like this in about thirty years! I used to mess with Jeeps alot, but had friends that had trucks so I'm not completely lost. I actually used to go to St. Joe St. Park in Mo. (number 9's we used to call it) back when you could see BigFoot, or the truck rumored to be, running around...mid 70's....
Anyway, here's the project:
1975 Ford F-250
Highboy
Vin says 360, seller says 390....we'll see when I got time to start checking things out.
Unfortunately it has drum brakes and the associated axle. It appears to be working well though so I'm not getting crazy about it.
No Picture. Welcome to the forum. Your project sounds like a GREAT way to spend quality time with your son. Don't worry about the 30 years ago stuff. Just go for it! You won't regret the bonding time with your son and he will have great (or....not so great! ) memories of his youth with his dad...
You have purchased a vehicle that manu of us (alright all of us) find dear to our hearts and it is great to hear that you are gonna save another and keep a dentside road worthy.
Frame off restorations are fun, but far too often folks loose interest, and a project becomes just a bunch of parts.
Hopefully this will not be the case, and without a doubt a completed project like this between a father and son is priceless.
Amazing that every owner of a 360 claims it is a 390. 360's become 390's on the day of sale. Check the stroke to verify.
These are good old trucks, and they can have theor own personalities. Mine do at least.
They are fantastic trucks, and have some aftermarket following, so parts are available.
Many parts interchange from year to year, and some later parts will make decent upgrades to your older "highboy".
PLenty to read on this site, so tak a little time and determine what you intend to do with your newly found jewel.
Welcome Jeff. Good luck with your truck. Sounds like a good project and should be fun for you and your son. Looking forward to pictures of your progress.
to post pics from Photobucket, post the [IMG] code into the reply box. the pic will pop up when you push reply.
well, it sounds like you and your son have caught the dentside bug.....you wanna make the truck kinda nice will still being able to take it muddin' if you have to.
no, 390 came factory in a 4x4 Ford truck, ever. all 360s.
stroke numbers
360 = 3.50"
390 = 3.78"
the drum brakes with the D44 and D60 rear.
what trans does it have?
you and your son should do the restore. have some quality time with him.
when my dad bought my truck for me about 2 years ago, the truck was in rather great shape. I kinda wish we would have restored it, though, so I could have learned more about my truck.
I recieved my 76 F-150 4x4 from my Grandfather, who bought brand new ordered special from Ford in 76. He told me he ordered with a 360. The VIN shows a 360 as do the valve covers. He had it rebuilt some 15 years ago and they told him it was a 390. I had a clutch put in 7-10 years ago Tthe guy said it was a 390. I have the heads off right now and the stroke is 3 about 3/4. Could Ford have made this mistake and possibly put the wrong engine in?
Thanks number dummy....I wont really know till I get started, but it really didnt matter to me other than it would be nice to have the original motor. I guess it really could be the 360 or someone could have put a different motor in it. Due to it being almost 35 years old I guess anything could happen. BTW, is there anyway to tell if it is the original, if it is determined to be a 360? are there any numbers on the motor that would correspond with other numbers on the truck? Or another way to research it? Any help would be greatly appreciated....
I appreciate your knowledge, and reading your posts.
Dr.Dirt,
The transmission I think is a C-6? the pan underneath is 17 bolt in a kind of L shaped config. Still learning........

You're gonna look at that engine and see 352 cast onto the drivers side of the block, and wonder...what the he!!?
The reason the block has the cast 352 number is...
All 352/360/390 blocks were cast as 352's, only when the blocks were finished could they be something else.
Casting numbers cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers, and casting numbers are WORTHLESS to ID what size the engine is.
The date code on the block is of no help either.
The stroke will determine if it's a 390 or not. It will not determine if it's a 352 or 360.
Stroke: 352/360: 3.50" / 390 = 3.78"
Bore: 352 = 4.00" / 360/390: 4.05"
The 352 was only used 1965/67, but with a 35 year old truck...who knows what's in there now.
EDIT: C6 = 17 trans pan bolt holes. The C6 was the only A/T available on 1968/76's with 360/390 engines.
