Question Limited Slip

This is obvious for some but how do you know if you have a limited slip diff? Is it labeled some where or is there an easy way to tell?

I need to service my rear diff and I need to know whether or not I need the friction additive.

I do not know the tag layout off the top of my head but on the tag there will be an "LS" in the numbering sequence if it is limited slip

Look in your door jamb under the word "Axle". "31" is a non-LS 3.73, "C1" is a LS 3.73. If you have 4.10s, I don't know the code off the top of my head, but here's a link where you can look it up:
What is my Ford rear end ratio, do I have positraction - Drivetrain.com

EDIT: 32 & C2 is the 4.10 version of the non-LS & LS, respectively.

IIRC, also there will be a "L", after the first digit, where the "." would be on the gear ratio number on the differential tag.

Roland's right. "3L73" is LS, "3 73" is non-LS...

If you can't read the tag, jack both rear tires off the ground and turn one tire by hand. If the other tire turns the same way, you have LS, if the other tire turns the opposite way, you have the open rear.

Okay I couldn't find crap on the door sticker. So I looked on the tag on the diff. It said L 73 and then a bunch of numbers after that. So is it safe to say I have a LS diff? Does anyone know what the rest of the numbers mean? Is there a website that breaks all that down for you, just curious?

Okay, since I found out I have a LS I need to service both diffs.

Everyone has their opinion on what oils they like to use but I'm looking to see the general concensus on a good full synthetic gear oil that doesn't rob the bank along with the friction additive if it's not already in the oil.

Got my oil from the dealer, + the additive.

I've thought about getting motorcraft fluids. I'v heard Royal Purple is awesome, but holy cow is it expensive. Anyone use it?

I just changed mine and used Red Line synthetic oil. Bought it from Summit Racing. It already has the friction modifier in it.

I've used Red Line oils for years in my Mustang, Ranger, and Explorer and so far so good.
