Designer Babies?

Snow day #2 leaves me in the house tending the wood stove and watching morning news shows.........

They are talking about genetic manipulations to permit parents to select certain physical traits in their yet-to-be-conceived babies.
Eye and hair color, for example.

I don't like the idea, personally. I guess with the exception of maybe "breeding out" genetic illnesses like Huntingdon's or hemophelia for example.
Breeding out these genetic diseases would be a boon to the human race, but selection of physical characteristics sends us down the path of "superior" race.

Imagine in 20 years the controversy over the home-run record if the athlete was genetically modified to be better able to hit a baseball!?!?!?!

I'm with ya on that.....

Genetic diseases? Sure. Physical characteristics? Hmmmmmmm.

Some of the genetic s--t is terrifying, though. Had an article in the USA Today about a week ago about a family with a genetic abnormality which causes stomach cancer......and if they had the trait, they had about a 99% chance of developing it by their 50s.......

The article was about a brother and 2 sisters having their stomachs removed to forestall getting the cancer. All of their stomachs, upon removal and testing showed signs of the cancer---meaning that they did that just in time.

Scary stuff. The sooner they could breed THOSE things out of the gene pool (like familial breast cancers, colon cancers, etc.), the better.

Didn't some guy named Adolf Hitler try something like this once?(The Lebensborn program).
However, the elimination of some genetic disorders/ diseases is interesting.

What if they screw up and your baby comes out with blue hair instead of blue eyes and the eyes are blonde color?

I was wondering how some of these selfish (expletive) people who want blonde-haired, blue-eyed kids will react when the kid comes out with brown eyes and red hair. They'll probably sue since they didn't get the correct design. Instead of celebrating a healthy baby, they'll be upset?

And what happens when something goes wrong and they miss a genetic mutation and the baby has Downs, or is blind or has some other "birth defect" (a term I absolutely despise, by the way)? Will abortion be the only solution for people like this.

But the most obvious question I have about this is are these people trying to take all the fun out of the conception process?

The term is "eugenics" and was first proposed in 1883 and then made synonymous with **** Germany. Guess it wasn't ok for ***** but ok for us...

Yup...most likely they would sue if a problem came up.

I have a niece by marriage that is pregnant with her second child and she found out this one is going to be a girl instead of another boy and she is very disapointed. She wants all boys and her husband does too in a way.
Good thing the husband has a very, very loving mother or this little girl that's coming would most likely be neglected somewhat!

Somehow doesn't this lead to the thought of some babies as "less" desirable? And if so, is there a final solution for them as well? All babies should be cherished.

"but selection of physical characteristics sends us down the path of "superior" race."

Let's not confuse **** pseudo-science with options that may exist one day.

Just as humans choose desirable characteristics in a mate, they may one day be able to choose them directly. If this produces people who are stronger, smarter, hardier, etc then they would BE superior and deserve to supplant those who are not just as Homo Sapiens supplanted their predecessors. There is no reason a genuinely superior race should care about lesser humans, because humans have no value except to themselves and that is purely subjective.
