Hi. Im looking for a work truck (logging) and would like your opinion on something. i have found 2 1996 f250s that look real good. They are the same in allmost every way (green, shortbox, extended cab, auto, both around 150000 kms, etc) except for the engine size. one has a 351 on gas and one has a 460 on gas and propane. my question is do you think the running cost of the 460 running on propane would cost alot more then the gas 351? and i have to haul probaly about 5 people and a bed full of tools, so does the 351 have good power or would i regret not gettin the 460? (i know that propane has less power then gas, but it can run on gas if i need the power). thanks. if you need any more info or dont understand the questions then just say so. thanks again.
From what I understand, the mileage of the two isn't very different. Can't comment on the propane, but on gas my 460 is getting around 10 all the time, I don't do much highway driving with it yet. Loaded down, the 351 would be about the same. If you plan on towing anything with it, I would go with the 460 for sure.
i have a 91 460, and its pretty much unstoppable. the fuel mileage doesnt even noticeably change with a flatbed with another truck on it driving highway speeds. if your doing any hauling or towing, go with the 460. the 351 will get better fuel mileage, by about 4 to 6, but the power of the 460 is undeniable.
351w is a GREAT motor, I would never knock it. It can tow some incredible loads, but it will work harder than the 460 to do it and burn more fuel to do it, until it comes to the point that the 460 is more economical to run in a heavy loads situation.
in terms of 351W Fuel Economy I had an 80 something F150 with a long bed, dual exhaust, AOD, and a 351W running a severely screwed of 2vv Computerized carburetor VV (Variable Venturi) and even with the shot seals on the transmission I added at minimum 2.5 Quarts of Transmission fluid per trip regardless of distance. and the Variable Venturi 2 Barrel computerized turd that was running on the rich side I got about 15 sometimes 16MPG UNless I put my foot in it then all bets were off the front of the truck would just lift up and Launch like a rocket!!!! 351Ws are Bad *** motors. 460s are aswell but as has been stated the loss of 5MPG for the Gain in torque would be a fair trade off I think...............I'd think the EFI 351Ws should be capable of better gas mileage than the old carbureted older brothers though
I have a 94 F350 SRW with the 460, automatic overdrive tranny and 4.10 gears. When it is running empty I can get 12 mpg with it. When I tie onto my 21' camp trailer or my stock trailer with horses it get 7-10 mpg depending on terrain and how fast I travel on the interstate. Speed is no friend of mileage. I also have a 95 Bronco with the 351w, automatic overdrive tranny, and upgraded to 4.10 gears. I run 265/75/16's on it so if I have done my math correctly, it has 3.73 gears effectively. With it running empty around town as my daily driver I get 12-13. On the highway I get a bit better. When I tie onto my camp trailer, I get 6-8 mpg with it. When it comes to lowend grunt, the 351 cannot start to compare with the 460 AND the 460 makes that grunt at lower rpm, which is where you will be working a pickup anyway. If it were me, I would chose the 460 for work. You are going to be crawling around the woods loaded. I bet in a year you will never see a difference in the fuel bill between the two, but you will darn sure appreciate the grunt of the 460. I traded a F350 with the 7.3L powerstroke when diesel was close to $4.50 last summer. When it comes to shear working power, the gas just can't compete with the diesel. I never got great mileage with it, but I could get 14 pulling my trailers. But this is off topic. I think if I had stock tire size on my Bronco so the gear ratio was a true 4.10, the pulling mileage would be slightly better. If the pickup you are looking at with the 351w doesn't have 4.10 gears, walk away from it for a work truck.
