This is my first ford rebuild and Ive ran into a problem. Im currently working on a 1970 ford ranger with a 360 the lifters were ceased so I went to buy new Lifters for it. The ones that I bought are about an eighth inch shorter than the ones ive taken out. Does this matter.
unsure. i put the edelbrock cam and whole shibang in mine and didnt take notice to the length of the lifters, but please make sure you replace your timing chain and gears while your at it. the cam sprocket has plastic teeth that break off and the timing chain will bounce around like a paintshaker. when i did this 30 dollar, 1 afternoon, 1 12 pack of beer job i increased my gas mileage and performance night and day.
its not just piece of cake crank, rods, and pistons. you will have to get new rings, get the cylinders honed, various bearings, and many upon many hours of labor and yanking your hair out, and then you might as well get your heads rebuilt while your at it, (couple hundred bucks), and this is only to get your motor to the specs it should of been built to from the factory in the first place, a regular 390. instead of making a sister motor that is basically identical but weaker.
my advice would be to make it a 410 or a 428 cobra jet. when my 360 goes, it will become a 428 cobra jet proffessionally built from a shop that only builds engines and i will just bolt it right in and bam! have a really mean truck.
Depends on the cost of a worn out 390 with a still servicable crankshaft and rods. New set of pistons with the 360 compression height in the proper over size, plus all the other overhaul costs.
Aftermarket stroker cranks seem to run $300 + rods IIRC.
Im replacinng every thing this has been a joke from the start. This motor was supposivly never touched but once I got her open I noticed that it had been bored .040 over already I miked it at 4.091. But thanks to all replying there is one that is not ceased so I will check the travel to see if it matches.
"when my 360 goes, it will become a 428 cobra jet"
You may convert your 360 to a 390 or 410, but the chances of boring that 360 block enough to make it a 428 are pretty close to nil.
Exactly... you can't take it out to 4.125 on a 360/390 bore unledd the block was cast with the thicker walls and grabbed for a smaller bore. The block can be re sleeved but will cost just as much as a good 428 block or even a new Genesis 427 Block. Even taking 352 4.0 bores out to stock 4.05 390 size is a risk.

Yeah, -if- it's a "352" block but chances are good if it's a "reverse 105" block.
