I have a question about what I believe you call engine stumble. The engine runs fine and no problems really, but at idle....it is not exactly smooth. It has what I suspect folks here call engine stumble. It just seems to skip a beat so to speak every few seconds. I am not sure if the timing between the skips is exactly the same each time...but it is consistent in that it does it always. I don't think it use to do it, but not sure really when it started. It has been doing it for awhile now though(month or two?). The engine in question is the 4.9 in my 94. The cap/rotor & wires are about a year old and the plugs are new. I am thinking it is an ignition problem, but am no expert. I have not pulled any codes recently, but will tomorrow.
I would like to address this problem soon, so I thought I would ask here to get some ideas before I start throwing parts at it.
EDIT....just had a thought.....could it be a bad fuel injector(s)?
It would be best to wait until you can pull codes before you start "throwing parts at it" as well. Could be a vacume leak.
I agree with that. Could also be fuel filter needs changed, plugs need changed, plug wires need changed. Could be a bad Throttle Position Sensor however pulling codes would probably point to things like that.
ok...codes are as follows
koeo codes......116, 636 & 114
CM codes are 332, 334 & 628
I am going to look these up now, but wanted to post them here first, since some already likely know what they mean.
116--Engine Coolant sensor out of range
636--Transmission Oil Temperature (TOT) sensor out of range
114--Intake air sensor(IAT) out of range
332--EGR did not open/respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittantly - EVR or PFE
334--EVP sensor is/was high - EVR
628--Excessive converter clutch slippage - Transmissions
I am guessing the egr might be the culprit here...but looks like I got some other issues as well.......
You need an opinion from Conanski on this one.
However the first three are all temperature sensors "out of range". Sounds like a bad ground or something.
Next 332 and 334 are EGR valve faults, may explain the stumble. Try unplugging the vacuum pipe from the EGR and see if that helps. If not it may need cleaned.
More worring is 628, "excessive converter clutch slippage". May be time for a fluid and filter change. But like I said, you need Conanski.
Hope this helps.
I was also wondering if something was causing those first 3 as well. Perhaps it was because the engine was cold? not sure...I may warm it up and try the test again.
As for the egr...I tried to pull it, but the collar on the tube is siezed good. I have put some lube on it and will try it again later, but I am afraid to break it till I have a new one in hand.
As for the TQ lockup code....The tranny fluid is not all that old and fluid levels are good, so I will have to investigate that one further. On the upside, I do have a spare E4OD...so we'll see what happens there.
Thanks for the input...I will of course update as I know more.
Also, I will add that all vacuum lines appear to be good.
There appeared to be no change when I removed the vacuum hose. However, when I unplugged wire connector, it tripped the CEL light, but still ran the same.
Also, I have been led to believe that they can be cleaned.....is that the case?
I am warming the engine now.
The reason I suggested to try unplugging the vacuum supply was in case the problem was that the EGR valve was having vacuum supplied to it at the wrong time.
Ans yes you can clean it and the passages. You might want to also try supplying vacuum to it at idle and see if the engine note changes. You can do this with a hand operated vacuum pump or by using a supply from the trucks own system. It could be that the diaphram is bad and that is the cause of the codes.
However go ahead and clean it.
Ok....with a warm engine....
I get a system pass..
111
....
The continuous memory codes are now
326,332,334 &628
so now I the 326 in addition to the ones I already got earlier.
This new code is also a egr code...
Pressure Feedback EGR shows low pressure EGR not seating or not seating intermittantly
I was somewhat shocked to find they are worth a couple of hundred bucks...This is why I would like to try and clean it first. I suspect the valve is original though, so it just may be time to replace.
