Hutch Mod Options??

I had some bad fuel that pretty much shut down my truck and I am gonna have to dropmy tank and drain and clean the inside of the tank.

I spoke to the boss about doing the hutch mod and he was very much against a fuel filter mounted under the bed. He hated the 6.0 rail filter and says that I cannot do it.

Can I do the hutch mod without my a filter?

What possible options do I have for mounting the filter elsewhere? I've seen airdog systems mounted in the front of the bed. Is this an option?

As always thank you for your knowledge and time.

I did the tank mod last summer. The only filter i have is the stock fuel filter set up.

I seen a lot of post that folks have done pre filters. They work to. guzzle did it

First, point out to the boss that this filter will be 1000 times easier to change than that stupid thing they put in the 6.0.

Second, you can mount the filter anywhere you desire, including under the hood, as long as the filter is between the tank and the pump. This might require some additional plumbing to route the lines that much farther forward to the filter, then back to the pump, but it should work.

Third, ask him if he would rather have you change a spin on filter under the truck (similar to an oil filter) or drop the tank next time you get a bad batch of fuel.

If nothing else, go ahead and do the harpoon while you've got the tank out. If you leave the stock set up in there, don't forget to clean out the filter screens inside the mixing chamber, or the tank will be coming back down soon.

You could put in one of these, like I did:

Here's what it looked like when I got some bad fuel. That little $3 filter saved my butt!!

Harpoon is WELL worth it!! I get all but 1/2-3/4 gallon in the tank when filling up now. Less than a gallon later, the fuel is up to the neck!!

It's the Fram G3/G12. The only difference is that the G3 comes with two short pieces of hoses & clamps. Like $3 or $4 at Wal-Mart, Oreilly's, AutoZoo, etc....

Show your boss this

I plan on adding a small skid plate under it just incase I slide off the transfer skid plate on something. It tucked up pretty good.

I really like the Dahl 100 with the bracket mounted to seat bolt. The bolt is a metric thread, but once I found a nut to use, the install was easy. With the Dahl 100 in place you may never need to change the OEM filter again.

A tip that may help when you drop the tank, I used tie down straps like are used for securing a load in the back of a truck. One at the front and one at the rear of the tank allowed me to drop the tank in a very controlled manner and then raise it back up when done without having a jack in the way. I never even took the tank out from underneath the truck. Having my exhaust cut out gave me plenty of room to work.

Here's an easier tip -- jumper your fuel pump to the battery, attach a piece of hose (I used the one that came with the kit ) to the filter housing drain, open the valve, and pump your fuel into a couple geri cans. The tank is plastic and very light when empty. I just unbolted the straps and pulled it out. I used my floor jack to hold it up while I bolted it back in.

Show your boss the pics in this thread and I think that he will come around. I've got something similar to what Joe has and changed my filter last week and it was super easy. Loosen a couple of hose clamps (mine has 4 because the filter is smaller than the hose) pop the new one in and tighten the hose clamps back up and your done. Make sure you have something under the filter to catch the diesel though. Much easier than dropping the tank again.

Jeffrey, I use two sets of vice grips to pinch off the lines to keep it from dropping too much fuel. Some does come out of course, but it helps with the hose crimped.

Why didn't I think of something like that. Like an idiot I was laying there letting the fuel drain into my pan thinking it would stop, but it drained way more than I thought it would and finally I just put the filter in and tightened everything down.
