Time to change out the axle lube

I am going to change out my axle lube, and was wondering what brand you guys run and how much you pay for a quart??
I was going to run motorcraft 75w-140 in the rear which will run about $14 a quart. Says the rear holds 3.3L which is about 3 quarts....right?? So about $45 to change the rear?? Seems kinda high, but I never change it before either.
I wonder why in the owners manual it says to run synthetic in the rear, and it says to use premium in the front?

Also, where is the best place to buy synthetic tranny oil?? Kind of an expensive oil change, so Im just trying to find the best place to order, buy

Thanks!!!

Buy 4 quarts to fill the Ford 10.5" rear. 3 won't do.

I used Richmond 75w-140, GL-6, w/ limited-slip additive. But it's a fresh install, so I can't recommend it w/o experience ( ie mileage).

Check the tag -
373 ... means 3.73:1 open diff
4L30 ... means 4.30:1 Limited slip

Mine said 3L73.

Front axle is a Dana 50, Dana specs different oil.

I used Redline in my rear diff. It also already has the friction modifier in it. So far so good. Ordered it from Summit and with shipping it ended up around $14/qt.

Same here... I got my RP cheaper through ebay... and like the quote above says, the Royal Purple gear lube already has the friction modifier in it's formula.

As long as you are removing the rear diff cover why not replace with an 08 alum cover??? Lots are available through FTE sponsor sites and good ol' ebay. Here's a pic of mine:

Have fun!!!

BTW... when I swapped the rear cover and rear gear lube, I jacked up the rear of my X from under the rear hitch receiver and lifted until just before the rear tires lifted... I then jack standed the right and left frame rails in front of the rear tires as well as both side frame rails behind the rear wheels (safety first). Doing it this way clears the gas tank skid plate cover above the rear diff cover and gives more space under the vehicle to move.

My Ex owners manual says 3.8 pints of "Motorcraft SAE 75W-90 Premium
4x4 Front Axle Lubricant".
