Valve covers

I just bought my first diesel. Got a smoking deal on a 96 QC F250. The guy I got it from was out of a job and it was way behind on maintenance. I've changed the batteries, ball joints and attempting to change the glow plugs.....I got the drivers side done but how in the world do I remove the passenger side valve cover???? Any other parts I should look into changing?

some people prefer to take the heater box out, but its possible to get it off without removing it. i just take the socket and put it on the bolt first and then put my ratchet on next. it makes it easier than trying to squeeze both through at the same time. use a regular socket instead of a deep well too. a deep well will hit the firewall. when you change the glow plugs be sure to get ALL of the oil out from around the plug. some people suggest a medicine dropper to suck it out, but i find that laying a rag over the head and then using an air gun to blow it out works a lot faster.

When I did the drivers side I just soaked the oil up with a rag. I did drop one of the glow plugs and it fell down the pushrod alley. After a short time of panic I was able to get it out. The passenger side doesnt even seem to have enough room to get it off without hitting the heater box?

its a tight fit for sure, but itll come out. much easier than removing the heater box for sure.

i didnt have any trouble getting the valve cover out because of the heater box. once it was unbolted it came out no problem. it just made getting to one bolt a little more difficult. as far as getting to all the bolts, i actually found the drivers side more difficult.

wow..the drivers side was a breeze other that dropping the one. My buddy has the same truck and tried to change his. He did the drivers side two years ago and said the passenger side was too hard so he didnt change them. It gets too cold here to not have them working right. Didnt plug it in one night and it took twenty minutes to start! How many bolts are on the heater box?

the drivers side was easy except for one bolt. the one right by the firewall. i just had to do the same thing on it that i did on the passengers side. put the socket on first, then put the ratchet on, break it loose, then spin it out by hand. none of which i would classify as "difficult", unless you call anything that you cant get an air ratchet on difficult lol.

Just curious, what brand glow plugs you putting in?
I remember reading about one brand that swells up and gives you big problems down the road

I read posts on here for several hours it seems before I decided what brand to buy. I had to special order the Motorcraft brand. All the people at Checker and Autozone kept telling me that Autolite was the same. I took all your advice and ordered the Motorcraft anyway

people at parts stores will tell you anything to sell whatever they have on the shelf at the time. if they tell you the brand they carry is bad then youll go somewhere else.

i was in advance last night and a guy came in to get a gallon of antifreeze. he asked the parts guy what brand he would recommend and he said "if youre low on antifreeze its because you have a bad thermostat." and he sold one to the guy. the guy had absolutely no need for a new thermostat, but the guy sold one to him anyways.
