You do not have to remove the heater box to get the pass VC off. Just unbolt the map sensor from the firewall, pull back the insulation on the heater box and you will seem a small module (right above the VC), unbolt it and set it aside. Now you have enough room to remove the VC.

On my 95 I use a 6" extension in 3/8 drive and a swivel socket for the back bolts. A regular socket and U-joint is too tall. It helps to have the extension that locks into the socket too so you do not keep dropping the socket down and have to crawl under the truck to get it (ask me how I know).

Lay the extension in the "V" formed between the heater box and the firewall, pointed straight down (with the socket on the end, of course), put it on the bolt head, put the ratchet in and have at it.

Took your advice and cut the insulation and pulled the little box off. MUCH easier. Was actually easier than the drivers side. She starts much easier now! Since that was fixed the fuel filter bowl decided to rott through when I was 80 miles from home. That was an expensive fix!!
