Bolting your chains on it ok, but do not weld your chains on. Welding them on changes the heat treatment of the steel and can make them weaker and more brittle.

DieselDirk, I was about to object to your saying not to use the quicklinks like THIS and wanted to give you ratings to support my position. The ratings I found support your position. 5/8 quicklink is rated at 6,800 lbs, 5/8 grade 80 transport chain is rated at 18,100 lbs. I did not realize the quicklinks were that weak. Mine will be coming off before the truck hits the road again (waiting on significant repair to left front suspension and brakes).

Thanks for the education this evening.

TexasDiesel97, the chains on converter gears on semi trucks are bolted which definitely supports the no welding. Welding would be cheaper and faster both in manufacturing the converter dollies and replacement of the chain. Another issue is welding will heat the frame in a very high stress location on the dolly and on the A frame on the trailer.

I learned my lesson about quicklinks a few years ago, in form of a fine.
Glad to be of help.
