My tranny is fine i think but it makes a slight noise when it shifts from 1st to second some times. The noise comes at the rear of the truck is sounds like a light clunk when it shifts. It is not very loud but is noticable. Anyone else experience this?
Empty as i havnt towed yet. I drove several others before i purchased and dont remember hearing anything. I was wondering if it could be a bad universal joint or something like that.
I would doubt it's a bad U-joint if it just happens when shifting from first to second because the driveshaft would already be under load and there for unable to clunk as it would if the needle bearings in the caps were weak. But I've never claimed to know everything so maybe I am wrong. I have not noticed any noise on mine neither but will listen in a little better now and see if I do. Good Luck
My transmission question, which has not garnered anyone's interest on FTE yet is this: When I have a heavy load, driving in tow/haul mode, the downshifts that the trans. make are VERY hard. It's like if you had a manual trans. and you downshift from 5th to 3rd without using the clutch, or, just dumping the clutch instead of easing into the lower gear. It's really a violent downshift whether I am slowing down easily or slowing down aggressively.
Upshifts I have never had a problem with but the downshifts are scary, some rear wheel hop happens in certain conditions. Of course, my dealer tells me "it's normal, the trans. is bulletproof". I told them, which we get along very well, that I would call them when my trans. is scattered all over the road out in the middle of nowhere.

I would suggest a bad TCM. Mine had one at 600 miles. But mine was the hard shift from 2nd to 3rd. Hard enought I though someone rear-ended me.
I suppose they put it on the computer and everything checked out ok?

I havent noticed any noises that grabbed my attention. A u-joint or slip joint would be felt on intial takeoff more than a shift point. Can you find a pattern that makes it better/worse? Hard acceleration vs easy? Straight or while taking turns? Do you hear anything when you go from drive to reverse?

Part of the tow/haul is that it is supposed to provide engine braking when slowing down. Mine doesnt always do this but it depends on how quickly I am slowing down and how much weight I have. I think the amount of engine braking is determined through the whole tow command system that senses your speed, braking, pedal pressure, etc. I know you have 2 trucks but I dont know if you tow the same with both of them. Does it seem more drastic in one truck compared to the other? My 04 truck was violent, my 06 seemed like it barely worked and my 08 is right in between them. If I brake hard it does seem more violent but that tells me its working like it should.
ruschejj,
take it to a different dealer. You definitly have a issue that someone should be able to identify. Some dealers suck so keep looking.
caprang,
it only does it taking off easy shifting from 1st to 2nd. it doesnt do it all the time either. this is also in a straigh line that i notice it. could be in a turn too but not sure. again not a big issue as its a very slight noise but did seem different than other F250's i drove. i'm more picky than most so some may not even notice this noise.
Something is obviously changing if it doesnt do it consistently. How about the drive to reverse test? Years ago I had a slip joint go bad and it felt worst when changing the direction of the driveshaft.
nothing when i from forward to reverse and back to forward. everrything is perfect. I need to take it in this week for the squeaky idler pulley so i'll let them take a look at it then. its so minor though i'm sure they will think nothing of it.
Thanks everybody for your input, sorry for intruding on your thread sawtooth.
I'll see what happens with the other truck. I usually end up with the heavy haul jobs, the other guy tends to drive like an idiot which is not good with a load worth up around 1Mil. And yes, our insurance is expensive.
I'll ask about the TCM when I go in for an oil change tomorrow. The dealer is pretty good to me and I have not pressed the issue in a long while.
Sawtooth: Could your issue be due to cold fluid or low fluid or low pressure inside the transmission? I'm pretty much just thinking of how the thing works and what kind of conditions would normally be difficult for the transmission.

Well i think the fliud level is fine but i'll recheck it to be sure. I have 3000 miles on the truck now and did notice at 1500 miles a dark brown type crust material on the end of the tranny dipstick. I took it to the dealer and they said everything was fine. Since then when i recheck it i have not noticed that material anymore. However, i will check the level once again. I have it at the Ford place now looking at this and replacing the idler pulley under a TSB number.
