The k&n is a oiled filter. A lot of people have posted problems with them. The newer tech is to use a dry filter for better filtration. The bully dog has a bad rep for tranny problems and has been said to cause head gasket failures (hg). The ase is the abreveation of the tune name which is aggresive street economy and it is said to be 130hp over stock. Keep in mind that the bullydog might not give any noticable signs of tranny problems but when adding extra hp and not correctly tuning the tranny you will eventually be prone to problems. The tuner I use is the sct and the majority of the people here recomend it, run it and have either sold their old tuners or are trying to sell the old tuners to switch. The sct uses custom tunes. Which can be made to fit your needs and your truck.
Understood, always like to hear various input. I have used K&N on all my trucks, Ford Excursion v-10 (two of them), Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, Ford chassis v-10 motorhome and various cars. I rarely put on more than 100k miles and have never had a problem. I do clean and reoil more frequently than the recommendations.
The Bully Dog has three tunes, Tow, Performance and Extreme. HP per their web site says
Tow = 40-50 Hp at the rear wheels
Perf = 75+ HP at the reer wheels
Extreme = 100-119 at the rear wheels.
I am runing in Tow mode 95% of the time but I only tow less than 5k. Usually around 3.5k load with trailer.
I run Perf once in a while. In Perf mode you can re-tune the tranny to smooth or aggresive. I use aggresive when I use this tune.
Same goes for Extreme tune. Aggresive on the tranny when I finally try it.
My biggest concern was when I try Extreme will my tranny hold up. Sounds like it will as long as I am not performing drag strip runs all day long.
The tranny will hold up but what no one really talks about is the tranny learn process that you need to do and that basically is to drive it stop and go a little bit and allow it to learn the power and work out the shifting. Just going 1-5 (power levels) on the fly isn't good on the tranny. Or 3-5 or what ever. Banks programmer has the best literature I've heard of
