I was reading about the Pioneer Avic, so that one got scratched off my list because Cnet said you have to switch back and forth between DVD's and CD's to use the nav part.
That said, I'm interested in the stock Ford system. My question is, do you have to have the Nav DVD or CD in the system when using the navigation feature, and if so, is it possible somehow to listen to a CD while navigating?
I currently use a Garmin Nuvi 260W for ny nav, annd it's GREAT. It doesn't need a CD to operate either.
The stock Nav system is dvd based. You can listen to CD's while using the nav. In the '07 nav the dvd is seprate from the 6 disc cd changer. never have to take out the dvd execpt to put an updated dvd in.
The Kenwoods have a built in Garmin system plus many more features the OEMs don't have. No need to use CDs or anything. The Garmin GPS is very intuitive and super easy to use. I have the basic DNX 5120 which, when installed, looks like it came from the factory. It has got more built in features than I will ever use, plus it sounds great with my Polk speakers.

you should look into them again
my understanding of them is that the 20 gig hard-drive stores the local maps from the Navigation DVD.
you can then remove the DVD and insert your own DVD or cd...you only have to insert the Nav DVD if you want to update your Nav Maps
I was looking at the Z-3 version, but I cannot get over the $700+ price tag

That's what I was expecting, but cNet is saying the Pioneer runs off the DVD. Also, do any of them work plug-n-play with the steering wheel controls? Completely?
if you find an answer though, please post it up. I might eventually do this mod myself. I also want to run 2 screens in the headrests to keep the kids quiet
I'd really like to find someone with a stock nav screen for sale that wasn't wanting 800 bucks......I don't even want it that much for the nav part...but just like the looks of it better....
The Ford system is made by Pioneer and has 2 DVD ROM readers, one for CDs and one for DVD map disc.
Is it a 6-Disc, with one having to be the nav DVD all the time, or does it load onto a hard drive or ROM chip and then you take it out? I'm asking because if I have it set for nav, I want to listen to tunes also; and I think if it's actively reading a DVD for nav, then it won't play tunes. Or is it 2 different slots completely with 2 different readers? (Optic thingies)

If it's the same as my mom's (Toyota..I know I know) it is two completely separate ports. That just makes the most sense to me.
Not an expert on all of the questions ... I have a AVICD3 in my 06 and the steering wheel controls work with the unit. I have to eject the NAV disk to play DVDs but the unit will remember the trip routing as long as it was contained in the disc (east or west) that was ejected.
AVIC411.com is a good source of info on the Pioneer units

With the OEM system, there are two completely separate slots. You load the 6-disc changer through a slot with the face plate in its normal position. The navigation DVD goes into a slot that is revealed when the faceplate drops down & slides out.
While listening to music & driving down the road with the GPS screen up, the audio source information--be it artist & track title, AM/FM channel number, etc.--is all contained in a small banner (about 3/8") at the top of the screen with the map taking up the remainder of the screen. Some of the pictures of the OEM navigation system both here on FTE & elsewhere show this if you look closely.
