Not an expert on all of the questions ... I have a AVICD3 in my 06 and the steering wheel controls work with the unit. I have to eject the NAV disk to play DVDs but the unit will remember the trip routing as long as it was contained in the disc (east or west) that was ejected.
AVIC411.com is a good source of info on the Pioneer units
I have an AVIC Z3, it DOES NOT use DVD based navigation...the nav maps are on the hard drive. It was originally a Z1, but I upgraded it to a Z3. It has a single DVD slot for playing CD/DVDs or upgrading the software/maps/gracenote DB when Pioneer releases updates (usually twice a year). It comes with a 30GB drive that uses 10GB for maps and the other 20GB for music. When you insert a disc it automatically burns the music (using either CD-Text or the internal Gracenote DB to reconcile names). The internal hard drive can be swapped rather easily (instructions over at avic411.com) to increase space or just mess with the software/internal images. You can also buy a steering wheel control module that looks real easy to install. Just need to spice a couple wires.
Moreover, you can count on more updates as the years go on (and get them for free through the previously mentioned website). The software has its limits, but its better than any stock system I've used.

Yea, CNet didn't mention the Z3. How nice. Do you know if it works with the steering wheel controls? Also, does it have satellite capability? Never mind, I'll google it.

Reason: Forgot google...it's 5am
Yes, there is a steering wheel control module available. Yes, it is capable of XM/Sirius with an optional module. I have XM/Sirius and was able to use the stock antenna that came with my truck...it had the same fitting. The only regular complaint is the slow response of the iPod module. However, why even bother with an iPod when you've got an internal hardrive, right?
or if you have the iPhone like I do. it can pull down internet radio stations and stations from major cities...so I can listen to my favorite stations in Texas and not have to listen to the crap out here in Hawaii
but yeah, that 20 gb hard drive would be nice to store a slim version of my music collection

I thought I'd fill it up quickly, but they use some proprietary encoding that's similar to ATRAC. I've burned a bunch 'o music onto mine and it's only a little more than half full.

My computer only has 3.2GB of music on it, and that's an @ssload of tunes.
anyone know how or where to reprogram the factory nav/radio.I installed one into my 05' but i need to reprogram it so some features will work like the lights and subwoofer
Doesn't surprise me. Most don't like to deal with the technical wizardry of the entertainment gadgets. Do a search over in the audio/electronics forum and see if you can get some more details on what is required.
