Well I went and hooked up a 28 foot enclosed race car hauler this morning to my truck! And to my amazement, the truck pulled it with no problems (never towed anything before).
Only problem is, only the left brake light and turn signal would work on the trailer. Both brake lights and signals work on my truck.
It also popped fuse #7 under the dash, so i put a new 10 AMP fuse, and just the left side was working again.
I have a 7 pin connector and a Class V hitch. The trailer brakes worked and everything else(outside lights, everything else inside)
So the way they are wired up, I think that its impossible to have just one brake light go on, unless the light bulb is burned out. And if that bulb is burned out, that would explain the Right turn signal not working too...
Thanks guys!
Trailer pulls much easier than i thought. These trucks sure are beasts! Pulled 4100 pounds without a problem what so ever!!
The way most trailers i've ever worked on are wired are: the left brake light and turn signal are on one wire, right brake/signal on another, marker lights on one. Notice I didnt include which color wire, while there are guidelines as to what color for a specific function, It cannot be guaranteed that who ever wired the trailer followed them. Its best to test and be sure. Trailer wiring is one of the simplest yet most aggravating things to work on. Ive got a trailer outside now thats so cobbled up Im just gonna strip it down and start all over. Corrosion and bad grounds make trouble shooting a PITA.
thats what the harness looks like when i took the boot off...
but the funny thing is, the pins that the blue wire goes to, the cover says that thats for the trailer brakes, and the brakes were working no problem. Also the Orange shows that its for 12V+, which may be, but then none of the lights would have worked right?
The 12v wire is for house lights on a trailer or charging a battery. It would have no affect on lights. I would repair the harness with a soldier and shrink tube butt connector.
I am going to price one at the Stealership tommorow, but will probably just repair this harness and call it good.
And ill hook the trailer back up and see if its just the bulbs (which i think thats it, because the right side wires are hooked up correctly and are showing 0 resistance on both ends with the harness unplugged)
