I was going to use a patch panel to replace the fender well on my bed I was looking at different welders in a Jcwhitney catalog and came across and ad in the center of the page it shows some rods and they say they can be used with a propane torch to join various things depending on the rod you use, including steel. I know this sounds like an easy way but for sake of arguement does anyone know if these work or at least for what I am looking for. It kind of sounds like a super strong solder but then again I don't know, any thoughts appreciated
Is it propane or MAP that they are using? I know somebody who used the small MAP take to braze cracks in his Bronco hood. It worked well. If your patch panel has a flange than even soldering would Probably be good enough.
Your not going to get the right amount of heat from a propane or MAP gas torch to do a good job without warping the panels. I honestly suggest you drop by a fabrication or body shop and have them weld in the new fender well. You can save yourself a lot of headaches and heartaches by removing the old one first, trimming and fitting the new one at home with a sawzall then taking it to them. Most shops could do this in about 2hrs for about $40-$60 per hour.
I agree with Krosati, the more heat you put on it the more likely your going to warp the metal. If you don't have a MIG welder (with Gas), you probably would be well advised to visit the body or welding shop after you get your parts fitted.
How about brazing? You'd need a real oxyacetylene torch, not a plumber's propane torch, but that would take a lot less heat and should be less warping. Has anyone tried brazing lapjoints instead of buttwelding in patch panels?
you will get the warping with that too.
best to weld any thing that steel if
you don't and you braze it the steel
is contamated and you can't weld it
you have to braze aways .
lap joint is stronger than butt .
you want to put a flange on it
