No, no, no, no, no.

I did not say to remove the distributor. The armature on the distributor shaft must be removed. This is the 8-legged piece you see when you remove the distibutor cap. Once the armature is out of the way, the pickup assembly can be removed with two screws. The distributor stays put the entire time. For some reason, the image I posted earlier is no longer showing up. The following diagram will help; you will find something similar in your Chilton's:

I have another question for you fmc400. I am in the process of restoring a 76 f-150 ranger xlt, I am learning as I go here.My father has a 73 f-250 ranger that was given to me it also has a 390 in it the same as my truck. My truck has the full time 4 wheel drive transfer case in it, which I am not that fond of. I was wondering if I will be able to switch my automatic tranny and my engine and use his transfer case I just would like a 3/4 ton frame and running gear. I am going to take my cab and box and put it on his because my body is in great shape only one spot of rust over wheel well and my interior looks amost brand new, I got a good deal at least I thought, I only paid $1500 for it. My fathers truck has a four speed manual in it which is great but tops put at about 55mph. Would I need a adapter kit to hook my tranny to his transfer case?

I had this same problem recently. Same problem - that she would run great til she got up to temperature, then start to "choke out". I wish someone would have told me about that little pickup coil before I changed out this, that and a few others. That one little part was $40 and the whole distributor was just $55. And I figured I could change out the whole thing easier than trying to get that little sprocket off. I spent 5 hours camped outside the parts store. Apparently it really is easy to mess up the timing on accident.

As for the oil pump shaft, it will come off. I used a bit-driver screwdriver and just dropped it back in and used the driver to rotate it. Just try not to use a magnetic one.

Now I've got to reset the timing and also figure out why I'm not getting any vacuum to the vacuum advance. Oh fun.
